At first I thought hey he came here and not the NYI which prevented them from possibly winning a Covid cup but now I'm thinking maybe they would have never even got to the ECF the way he plays playoff hockey.
People who say playoff hockey isn't different should just closely watch his game during diluted regular season hockey vs playoff hockey.

Panarin would be fine if we had a mackinnon instead of Mika for example.

Mika is not an issue. He needs to stick to Kreider. They been together for years. Panarin needs to be more aware on the ice and not turn over the puck. Be better aware defensively. Not that hard. You are an NHL player.

These guys are what they are. Kreider I appreciate improved his scoring the past two years. And maybe Mika was injured. But my point is that the ‘core’ is not hard enough. None of them are a ‘problem’ per se. But as a group something has to give. If we didn’t have to sweat a salary cap, sure, keep ‘em all. But the reality is the core needs a re-boot.

I look at it this way, IF your best player is not going to be existent come PO time, you have a very very difficult task ahead of you if you want to win the cup. I don't like the NYRs chances if this is a continuing story line.

Want to hold Bread more accountable while also annoying him enough to contemplate waiving his NMC? Require him to speak to the media, no more hiding. If he doesn’t want to, implement team fines and suspensions.

One concern with that is how it’ll affect Shesty, who also doesn’t do it. However, given Panarin is a veteran, wears a letter and is the team’s highest paid player, I don’t think instituting a rule that includes him while giving younger players more leeway is that difficult.

Shesty is our MVP. He can do whatever the f*** he wants with the media when he's playing like this.

Panarin needs to face the music.

The lack of production is bad, but add the bad turnovers like on the Hughes breakaway. It’s too much.

I get it, he had 90 points, but would have preferred he’d cap at 80 for the regular season and save the other 10 for the playoffs
It’s why I’m starting to feel points are the most overrated stat in hockey. Without additional context on how those pts are earned, they don’t tell much of the story.

If I was Panarin I'd want a change of scenary. Give the Rangers a list of Cup Contenders he'd like to play with forcing them to retain quite a bit of salary to make that kind of deal. This will work best for both sides.

Assuming he prioritizes winning over lifestyle. If that was indeed his focus, he wouldn’t have signed here in the midst of a rebuild, so it’s safe to assume he prefers being paid 8 figures to live in/near NYC. From a team culture standpoint, it’s yet another reason why his $11.6mm is better spent elsewhere.

Have to be wary of throwing the baby out with the bath water. We have dumped some pretty good players over the years. Our biggest weakness is the transition game. We need a Dman and a Center that can get the puck from our end to the offensive end fast and consistently. People can argue points but sometimes they do not tell the whole story. Bread outscored Timo. Actually Kane outscored Hughes and Timo combined. Stats are not always the way to judge everything.

Isn’t that a great argument against valuing Panarin’s regular season production so heavily? Sure, his points look great, but how’s his actual game? Worth 11.6M against the cap for 3 more years?

Is he worth 11 mill? Can not answer until I know the alternative. Just having 11 mill more cap room doesn;t move us forward. We need to get some top players to replace him. We moved guys like McD and Brady S for cap room. They seem to have done well on their new teams. I'm not against moving Bread as long as we better our team by doing it.

Here's another: tell him he'll be taking a backseat this year in terms of premium ice time, starting with significantly less PP time (Kakko takes his spot on PP1). Maybe he'll waive if the plan is made clear to him early in the offseason.

It will most likely hurt the team's maximum results to do this, but I'm not so sure this team doesn't need to withstand a step back next year before taking two steps forward. There's also a chance they become a better overall team as the year goes on. Even if Panarin stays, a 90 point Panarin and a 40 point Kakko combination is not as valuable as a 60 point Panarin and a confident 60 point Kakko, despite less combined points.

I thought his RS was pretty good this year (not the same BS shit show that 2021-22 was despite the point totals) and even then, not worth the 11.6. He hasn't been worth the money since we hit the Covid pause.

We've gotten to the point where people want to try to make excuses for him by saying "oh he needs to play with x because he doesn't fit with y." He makes 11.6 a year, he should be able to play with anyone (yet it seems like he can't play with anyone.)

Not entirely related to this convo but he's also one of the dumber players in the league. His hockey sense may be the single most overrated attribute applied to anyone in hockey. I chuckled when the Panthers scored their OT goal last night, partially because it happened to the leafs, but also because I was thinking that if Panarin had gloved down that long pass, that goal would have never happened. He wouldn't have waited for support to catch up or rim the puck around the wall - He would have skated himself into being funneled out and turned it over, assuming that he didn't get stripped before entering the OZ first.

Bugs me greatly that it doesn't seem like the org even wants to consider moving on from him. The coach may have been a problem, but he will continue to be the biggest one on this team until he's out of here.

Never in the history of the league has there been as big a difference between what it takes to succeed in the regular season, and what it takes to succeed in the playoffs.

Tampa adjusted after Columbus wiped the floor with them. Toronto never adjusted. We need to adjust.

Tampa's adjustment was not having a goalie with an 85.6 save percentage.

Those players were being blanketed by Zib and shooting against Shesty. Bread was shooting against an AHLer and turning the puck over in bad areas as is his M.O.

If Panarin won’t budge on the NMC, we have no way of knowing what the front office wants to do. It’s pretty clear though that Drury is unhappy with the team given Gallant’s firing and it’s obvious to everyone in the room that Panarin is a main culprit of that.

If Drury could move on from Panarin I have no doubt he would. Heck, Gallant may even still work here if Drury could trade Panarin.

The firing was a clear indication that he doesn’t think the team can win as is. And Panarin is the (financial) black hole here.

The next coach's task will, no doubt, be to get more out of Panarin and the rest of the top 6 during the playoffs next year.

Maybe it's as simple as that. But I don't remember Tampa playing nearly as nasty in that series, or previously, as they did during their two cups. They were arrogant, dirty, and highly skilled.

Being only one of those things is not going to cut it.

Unless you have a top5 player of all time, and another top 3 player in the league, scoring at a ridiculous rate. Then *maybe* you can squeak across the finish line.
