Player Discussion Artemi Panarin

i wouldnt go that far...the hate for trocheck on this board is wayyyyy overblown
I don't think the board "hates" him. He's just being misused right now and he looks really bad while doing it.

It's tougher than anticipated to make Trochek work. He does his best with grinders. Him and Panarin are oil and water, completely incompatible. And it's been seriously awful to watch.

its funny because panarin does best with grinders as well

I don’t hate Trocheck but it’s fair to admit they probably would have been better off just giving Chytil the 2C spot and signing a cheap short term 3C

It is what it is, wouldn’t be surprised if Trocheck is the 3C sooner rather than later

disagree that we would have been better off with slotting chytil into the 2C spot, right now trocheck offers alot more then fil does....the problem as i see it is panarin not being bale to evolve his game to play with him

Panarin has kept up scoring rates amidst a historic rise in scoring in general. Each year that passes he scores less and his overall game deteriorates.

I still don't think it's age related. He's just lazy as all hell. If he's so concerned with load management maybe he should stop staying out and extra 15-30 seconds every shift.

By dom at the athletics model, Panarin hasn't even been a top 100 player this season. I don't read too much into models but it's apparent even to them the player has been a huge disappointment.

The thing is, I do think Panarin makes great plays just about every single game and continues to be offensively dangerous with his passing ability.

Watching highlights of previous seasons doesn't really give a balanced view of who the player was in the past because, by their very nature, you're only seeing the highlights.

It's really hard to understand exactly what is different about his game. Honestly, I've seen him play live at the height of his game in March 2020 (actually the same night Zib scored 5 goals) and even then he struck me as a player that "floats" in the neutral zone and defensive when he doesn't have the puck.

He was very opportunistic but didn't appear, by any means, to be the hardest working skater on the ice.

But I think we all recognize that something big is missing from his game that used to be there. He used to be a major play-driver and make every other player better when he was on the ice. Now he's something else. But it's hard to pin down why for me.

There's no pressure on him and he lost the edge.

He signed a mega deal, coming to a big city.... it was a lot of pressure. He had a legendary debut in 2019... arguably as good of a season as a Ranger has ever had....

then step by step, it got worse and worse. He was idolized. He bought into the hype... A hands off coach... 10's of Millions of dollars and a Country Club/resort type atmosphere.... The hope is he snaps out of it. The media needs to start putting pressure on him because we know the team wont.... Unless Drury pulls some Machiavellian stunt and calls him out.

Yeah Trochek will be a 3C, Panarin a 4 LW, Trouba a 3rd pair D. This team has issues lol.

He doesn't backcheck, he doesn't drive offense. He has fantastic hands but he's playing grandpa hockey that he probably could play into his 40s. I don't think it's laziness, he has lost the strength and conditioning he had 4 years ago that allowed him to feast on gaps and lanes. Maybe he needs some Russian juice or whatever but he's not going to get stronger and faster going into his mid-30s.

It's too late. It's hard to get back what he lost, if not impossible.

That idea is so insane it might work lmao. As long as we're evenly rotating the lines and Panarin gets the full 2 min every PP so his minutes are still the same, because it would be dumb to only play him 10 mins a night. But that would really throw a wrench in opposing teams plans for match ups. Is Panarin going to feast on the other teams 4th line? Or would we force them into matching up against our 4th line, leaving our top 6 to feast on their shitty lines?
I doubt that’d be the outcome in this scenario. Panarin still has the ability to feast on shitty teams that aren’t playing competent defense, but if you threw him on the ice to play against three dudes who are going all out to ensure they stay in the league, that’s the worst case scenario in my eyes. He’s not going to dangle around a bunch of benders in the NHL. That’s not a thing.

That’s not true. He had it for 2-3 weeks to start the year. Obviously it didn’t last

Some of it also comes down to conditioning and training. Were soft In every sense of the word… and management is ok with it.

Panarin would be a consistent top 3 player in the NHL on Carolina.

2 weeks in October. Sorry imo they don't really count the players were not up to speed yet.

Nah, he's 31. But the window is closing for him to be that guy for sure.

I meant he's not going to get back to 2019 top form not that he is totally washed up.

Don’t need Doms model to see that. He’s been … not elite. He’s barely above 1 p/pg. you can get that for 7m AAV these days. Zib, who I’ve been critical of, has almost as many points, way more goals, and actually plays 200 ft. Panarin is a 12m dollar P.A. paranteau right now

Have to agree. Starting the season strong is meaningless. A lot of players are on pace for 200 points or 100 goals after 5 games. Panarin’s game wasn’t really any different. He may have attacked center ice a touch more, but D weren’t up to regular season speed taking away the space, let alone playoff hockey.

Panarin simply has too much comfort and not enough internal drive. I don’t know that the BreD man’s life long, ultimate dream has been to win a Cup. I think he’d be perfectly happy with millions of dollars and personal recognition for being a top tier talent. He doesn’t have that unquenchable fire and now that he’s 30+, rich AF and had a Hartemi craze in 2019, he doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone. We’ll never see that player again, IMO.

I meant he could still be top form at 31

That last paragraph is utter rubbish IMO.

I don’t like the character attacks on Panarin (not just from you, but in general). If you’re familiar with his life story you know he is a very driven guy with more determination than nearly anybody. I think we need to wait until the next playoffs before writing him off like that

-Less engaged defensively. He was always opportunistic and perceived as "floating" defensively, but he used to take pucks away from people opportunistically in all 3 zones in ways that got noticed throughout a game.
-He was better at winning 1-on-1 battles for the puck in all 3 zones, particularly in open ice.
-A greater tendency to force plays that aren't there in the offensive zone. Yes, he was never a "take it to the net" kind of guy, but he'd curl back at the circle, and wait for a play. If nothing was there, he'd go for the safe play around the boards, or he'd utilize fast feet (the way Fox often does) to bait a defender into giving him a passing lane, and then take advantage of it. Now, he gets in a passing position, hesitates, and if there's still nothing there, tries to force it through the defender which usually results in a block or interception.
-Greater tendency to play the puck on his backhand. Does that all the time now, and these passes are much softer and easier to pick off. He used to reserve the backhand for short plays in zone, not long cross ice passes, or lead passes to teammates cutting through the middle of the ice that have to be perfect.
-Greater hesitation shooting the puck. If you got him the puck in a scoring area, he'd fire it right away, if not outright one-time it. Now, he'll corral the puck, look around to see if a pass is there, look at the net to aim the shot, then after 2 defenders have moved into the shooting lane and the goalie has corrected for the angle, if there's still no one open, he'll finally let the wrist shot go and usually not score. Short of a breakaway or 2-on-1, he almost never shoots off the rush anymore.

Those are the biggest differences I see between now and 3 years ago.

Still a great player, but in Spring 2020, he was absolutely elite.

He was also great in 13 minutes -

Bread will be fine. He had to and still is adjusting to new line mates, the power play is in a rut, and he’s still over a ppg with the team on track to get over 100 points and in reach of 1st place in a much tougher division. He’s going to go on a tear that people will point and ask why he can’t always play like that. but it’s a long season and after some of the criticism he got after his performance in the playoffs, maybe he’s trying to save something for the postseason.

Dont let @chosen see this

Still can't back up your allegations, I see.

Still waiting for proof of your allegation that Trouba threw his skates because of Panarin. Yeah, I know you can't back it up.

So, a guy who has chemistry with no one puts up 90 points and leads the team in primary assists?

Sound logic.

He must be better than a superstar. Putting up 90 solo? Wow!!!
