Player Discussion Artemi Panarin

It’s a little concerning that the only forward I can think of that he’s had chemistry with since coming here is Strome.

I don’t like that it feels as if every center he primarily plays with plays better away from him.

It’s sad to say, but he hasn’t been an $11M player since March 2020.
Because Strome was a perimeter player who didn't give a shit about playing defense, just like Panarin.
He drove to the net that lead to a goal and celebrated with a leg kick. Maybe he’s back?
It was 3 on 3 and no one was in front of him.

The Panarin we had his first year here was a force in all 3 zones. I wish we could get that player back. But it seems like that ship has sailed. Maybe he'll put in the effort when the games matter more, but I'm not counting on it.

IDK why he has to force every pass. They are all low probability plays and hardly ever work. Then the other team flies through the neutral zone with possession.

Fox is able to deceive opposing players to open space for the seem/higher risk pass. Panarin tries to be creative but everyone knows what he wants to do.

Sure. But the scary part is that Strome was also one of those players that played better away from Panarin.

It’s…not good.

The Panarin we had until March 2020 was probably the best NHL season I've ever seen from a Ranger forward in my entire life. He was all-world league MVP caliber. Pure dominance and getting this team to win by himself at times. He was better than Gaborik's peak and better than Jagr even. A fully complete player in every sense of the word that controlled all three zones.

If that's your standard for our forwards then you're going to be disappointed for the most of your life. It's a once in lifetime type season. Only generational guys like Crosby, Kane, McDavid, and Ovechkin have those consistently.

We're lucky we have Fox who can be that guy in his position. Seriously... we are spoiled we have one of these types of players. We NEVER had guys like Fox. And now we have him.

I don't think we are ever getting that Panarin back though... so maybe make peace with who he is now. He'll still put up 90 points. He'll make good passes on the powerplay. He'll be one of the best players in the league on shootouts (seriously he's top 2 or 3 in the entire NHL).

He's maybe not an $11 million player but he's an excellent offensive top 6 player who will hopefully have a better playoff this year.

It's not my standard for all forwards, just Panarin. He could be that guy again if he wanted to be.

The effort was there. He had Torts in him. His head got gassed up in 2019.... As some say, he loves to smell his own farts... not realizing his seasons success was predicated, on what you mentioned, effort and skating in ALL zones... it's the foundation to letting his skillset flourish.

He also could snipe corners. Same could be said for Zibs. It's a team wide issue now. Everyones shooting skills have deteriorated on the team.

I do think Torts got him to be the best possible player and DQ lost him.

Yesterday was as frustrating a game as you're going to see from Panarin.

Beyond forcing passes, he held onto the puck multiple times where he had a clear lane for a pass on the PP which would have resulted in either a goal or at the very least, a much better scoring chance than what we ended up with. The worst thing he did was on the last PP, Fox had 2 defenders on him and a ton of space to lay a puck into open ice (which he did eventually) and instead of skating into that space to give Fox an option, Artemi was asleep at the blue line and only started moving once Fox basically had no choice but to move the puck and wasn't even close to receiving the pass (which is hard to do with all that open space that existed. That was the most braindead thing I've seen from Panarin and he's done a tonnnnn of stupid over the last 3 seasons.

Like good on him for getting to the net in OT on the sequence that eventually led to the winner, but if we're being real that was played about as poorly as it could have been played by Heiskanen (who had one of the worst shifts I've ever seen - made at least 4 mistakes in 15 seconds which is hard to do.)

Left to his own devices... he believed the hype and degenerated with the long leash he still has.

He had Laffy WIDE OPEN on one play. The lane was also WIDE OPEN to Laffy. Amazing

Yup, on the 2nd PP of the game. Had him again on the same one where he fell asleep at the blue line but chose to take a shot that missed by quite a bit.

I really hope that he was one of the guys playing through an illness yesterday since that will at least excuse some of it.

I think he showed up unprepared for the bubble against Carolina. He looked decent the following year (not as elite but still good) then tapered off to whatever this is with GG. I gave him the benefit of the doubt last year since he was injured by Wilson the prior offseason.

And even though I think he's playing better this year than last, I ultimately think he's lost the hunger to prove himself. He has 80 million dollars and a great life. I don't blame him. I'd probably coast quite a bit too.

But it's frustrating to know he was once maybe the best player in the league and now he's more like top 15 or so.

Backchecking is a matter of effort. Going to the dirty areas is a matter of effort.
“It’s tough to get out of bed to do roadwork at 5 am when you’ve been sleeping in silk pajamas."

He gets paid A LOT.
He gets praised on how amazing he is, based on his play during 2019 pre-covid.
He doesn't put the work in
He doesn't get reeled in by the coaching staff
He's gotten way too complacent. Lazier than when he first got here.

That is bound to happen when they get further and further from the opposing net when they shoot .

Panarin has incredible talent and I do find him entertaining, but based on his last playoffs I have serious concerns about his ability to reach that 'next level' in the playoffs, he was downright horrible sometimes

When you package all that together I do wonder, if really is worth investing all that money in

Im very eager to see how he performs these playoffs

Last game was an interesting case for Panarin. It was a tight checking, playoff intensity game. He spent 99% of it on the perimeter forcing passes and turning the puck over. But for the last 1% I thought he did exactly what we’ve all been asking of him. On KAM’s goal he threw the puck on net from a bad angle to start the scrum, then on Fox’s he drove the net on Heiskenan (a top defenseman) got a good chance and fought for the rebound to set up Fox.

He is a strong player on the puck for his size and if he starts playing a more simple game we’ll be going places. Clearly he’s capable of it

As you say, he's still one of the top players -- in the regular season...however, he's not a top "playoff" player. When games are tight checking and there's less ice to operate in, he does not adjust....he will try to force things...and we've seen the result: those passes get picked off at an alarming rate.

I’m not. I’m expecting the same old with maybe a big goal that tricks people into thinking he’s clutch.

He’s no more useful in the playoffs than Rick Nash was but gets way less flack from the fanbase.

The slacking off he did before the first COVID bubble really changed him as a player for the worst.

He was terrible last year in the playoffs, I'm not expecting an improvement.

You must have not been around for the Jagr years. He was robbed of the MVP in 05-06. Highway robbery!
