I don't think it's quite as easy as "If he wanted to play better he could play better."
Yeah, I think his physical ability is not quite what it was. Rust never sleeps. He was insanely good his first year or two here.

We have him for three more years beyond this season. It will be interesting.

Watching highlights from the 2019-2020 season and the biggest difference that stands out immediately is that he was skating faster and harder all over the ice.

Also the chemistry he had with Strome kind of covered up the same types of high risk passes and plays he makes now (which become turnovers), they were just connecting a lot more often.

He's playing with a much higher pace
He's attacking
He's actually skating and not defaulting to floating to the high boards.
He's going to the middle of the ice
He's shooting... and actually hitting corners

We need 19-20 Panarin in these playoffs. If we somehow get it we will win the Cup. I really do think it's as simple as that when you look at how the roster has matured in the last 365 days.

the Edmonton NYE game at about 4:10 of that video is one of the greatest individual efforts ive ever seen in my life in hockey. He almost single handily clawed them back into a game where they were down SIX-ZERO.

this video is so depressing...........I miss this panarin

Panarin was electric to start this season. I continue to believe he's intentionally keeping reserves in the tank. Load management. He's not young anymore. I will reserve judgment for after the playoffs.
I really hope this is the case, but my fear is there have been times we really needed him to “let some out of the tank” and it just doesn’t show up. I’m concerned he’s just lost a step and he’s struggling w/ doing the little things that used to come so much easier for him. Combine that w/ last year’s performance at ES and in the POs, and it certainly seems to point less towards load mgmt.

I’d love to be completely wrong though, cause the Panarin of old was a sight to see.

He's so good that even his "terrible" season last year is one of the greatest in history of an original six franchise.

Trochek and Panarin play a completely different style of Hockey. Trochek is all speed and is usually into the zone with the puck while Panarin is just entering the zone or at the blueline. Panarin's line has always worked best when he's driving the offense. Mow he's just a spectator. They do not mesh at all 5v5.

Who does Panarin have chemistry with?
I think it's uniquely bad with Trocheck because he is abysmal at zone entries with the puck on his stick and it makes it really easy to cheat towards Panarin when he enters the zone. Trocheck works best with grinders which is why that Kreider-Trochek-Vesey line worked really well.

I don't want to f*** up what they have now but it would be nice to see Panarin-Chytil-Kravtsov. Chytil's ability to enter with speed would greatly free Panarin to make plays on the rush.

I too would like to see Trocheck off that line in favor of Chytil, but as long as Panarin keeps sitting on the perimeter trying to force passes through the middle ice no one will find success on that line. I think what we should see for now (given the success of Goody-Chytil-Krav last game) is:

Kreider-Mika-Kakko
Panarin-Trocheck-Laf
Goodrow-Chytil-Krav
Vesey-Brodz-Dont Care

I agree with this take. But Panarin doesn’t have chemistry with anyone. Even Strome last year - every game the posts were that the bromance was over and it was time to move on. As Panarin has become less and less engaged, there is NOBODY that he clicks with or compliments. He is a pond hockey player who ignores all fundamentals and responsibilities but has top .1% skills. He’ll get his points, but he doesn’t fit with anyone and he doesn’t help a team.

He and Trochek are a poor fit, and I don’t see us running a Kreider/Trochek third line that has 14M or so committed to it, so it’s a real shame we just gave him the contract we did. Not that he’s been bad, but if Chytil is going to end up being the 2C, we could have found cheaper options that fit better and we’re younger.

Panarin is a problem. He and Trochek are a bad pair. He doesn’t work well with Zib. I doubt he has the speed to play well with Chytil and Kravtsov and they seem to both play better away from him. At 5v5, Panarin belongs with Goodrow and Blais. The grinders he craves. Let him get every minute of PP time and play 4th line 5v5.

Laf - Zib - KK
Vesey - Chytil - Kravtsov
Kreider - Trochek - Gauthier
Panarin - Goodrow - Blais

Kreider and Laf and Vesey can rotate.

That idea is so insane it might work lmao. As long as we're evenly rotating the lines and Panarin gets the full 2 min every PP so his minutes are still the same, because it would be dumb to only play him 10 mins a night. But that would really throw a wrench in opposing teams plans for match ups. Is Panarin going to feast on the other teams 4th line? Or would we force them into matching up against our 4th line, leaving our top 6 to feast on their shitty lines?

I feel kinda guilty, I said Panarin was going to regress from last season, but was talking more about his point production, not his overall play. I get the issues with him, but he is still a player we need on this team. Just need him to be how he was when he first came here.

Trocheck is a player that just goes goes goes. Panarin stops at the line and tries to just dump it down the wall on his own side, or he holds up and tries to throw it back to the middle/across the rink. If we had better center depth, I would have played with the idea of Trocheck on Zibanejad's RW, and Panarin with Chytil / Kakko.

Panarin has 3 high danger unblocked chances. Trouba has 5. Panarin just isn't moving forward enough.
