There was a rumor earlier this year that Panarin needed to have an extended period of time in the off-season to recover from some sort of injury. My assumption was that it was associated with the Wilson incident. He seems to be playing more tentative than in the past which to me screams like he is avoiding contact on purpose. I think we need to give him another off-season to get back to form if that is the case and lets not forget, the guy scored at a 100+ point pace this year, leading the team by a pretty wide margin (15 points in 6 less games than Mika).

I think this is a case where we need to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. Could he improve? Yes. But just tossing aside a 100+ point 30 year old seems counter-productive.

I don't doubt what said person heard (as in, I don't think they made it up), but i'm calling bullshit on this rumor.

There is zero reason for this to have been a secret. Injuries to players are always revealed at the end of the season. A serious injury to Panarin would have been made public in an attempt to levy a sanction of some sort against Wilson too.

I absolutely do not buy him being hurt as an excuse for his garbage play.

It's not like he looks like he can't skate.. it's not like he looks like he can't shoot or go in and dig in the boards... He's doing all of those things. Let's cut this bullshit out now. If he's hurt it's no more than anyone else.

He's also trying really hard.. I don't buy for 1 minute that effort is the problem. I see a guy trying really hard.

No.. the reason panarin has been trash is betwee his ears.

His decision making had been beyond horrendous. The sheer number of unforced giveaways he's had is sickening. And it's not like these are great plays the d are making.. he's constantly trying to make seam passes that guys are just waiting to pick off. It happens... Every... Single... Shift

Panarin has been trash because he's played like shit.. it's not effort related and it's not injury related. He is playing like crap. He's forcing the play way too much instead of taking what's given to him.

The bolts are giving him the outside or the pass to the points.. instead he forces a cross ice pass to Copp. Turnover... Puck comes back the other way.

Over and over and over he tries the same damn play and it's not working. He did it all regular season and advanced scouting has taken it away from him.

His inability to adapt has been jaw droppingly bad.

As others have pointed out since the first series, the injury issue appears to be upper body and specifically with his ability to pass/shoot the puck. He’s having difficult rotating and getting muscle on anything and it’s leading to lots of turnovers. My best guess is a torn labrum. I guess we’ll find out when the season closes.

Meaningless stat inflated by an overzealous home scorekeeper in the playoffs. The top 5 players in giveaways/game at home in the playoffs are all Rangers (And 6 of the top 7 in giveaways/min)

The most giveaways/game on the road in the playoffs are Kucherov (by a lot), McDavid, Killorn, and then Panarin (100+ mins TOI in both scenarios/forwards only).

I agree that he's turned it over a lot but referencing the giveaway stat is not the way to show it.

----

For reference I just went to the video to look at his 7 giveaways credited in G1 vs Pittsburgh...

1-4:05 - pass to Strome in the neutral zone that hit Strome's foot and Marino picked up the loose puck. Not a real giveaway (not a great pass either though).

1-10:16 - clear attempt under pressure from behind the net that got deflected by a penguin. I don't think this is usually counted as one.

3-4:44 - Lol. Puts the back along the boards in the offensive zone as happens a million times a game and a Penguin is the first one to get it. Very much not normally counted as a giveaway.

4-18:38 Even worse ruling than the last one. He gets to a loose puck on the blue line (skating in the direction of the d zone), spins around and fires it along the boards to keep the puck in the zone and a Penguin is the first one to get it in the corner. Not remotely a giveaway.

5-6:46 He gets to a loose puck and softly dumps it out of a zone and Dumoulin is the first one to pick it up at the center ice red line. This one is marginal. I can see it being counted though.

5-10:22 Egregious turnover at the blue line. Almost cost them the game.

6-0:54 - The time is wrong on this one as the Penguins have had the puck for 10s at this point but at 0:45 he tries to make a pass to Strome in the offensive zone (definitely the right play) and the defender made a nice play to stop it. I can see them counting this though.

I would say in general for sure there is one there with the outside chance for 2 or 3 credited. Most are just nonsense by the scorekeeper.
I was just pointing out his own stats against himself from the regular season and prior playoffs. The eye test, for me, shows him turning it over more all playoffs, so those stats check out. Tonight we were home and he had at least 3 giveaways so I don’t know what you mean by the scorekeeper at home being the cause

I hope he straightens things out during the offseason. We need him to take over games if they want more deep runs.

Not making excuses but between the undisclosed injury from Wilson and then again at the end of the season, I think he's been fighting something all season long and it's affected his play. Hopefully moving up with Zibanejad, healthy Copp or Chytil moving up, he gets back to looking like a 100 point player.

He played better last night. Still not 12M good or 100 point, leading scorer good, but noticeably better and I’ll take that. A star player getting shutdown in a game like that is much more acceptable than a star player playing like the drunk beer league hot shot. I’ll be content if he brings that effort level and willingness to try different looks in whatever games remain for us this post season. It’s never been about the production for me. It’s been about attacking and giving your team opportunities rather than creating them for the opponents. Most of the playoffs he’s done the latter. Last night he did the former. I can’t really celebrate last night’s performance, but I don’t have anything bad to say about it.

If we could trade him for a good return, I would at this point, clear up cap space and get some younger talent in the door. I'm no GM, but this guy is not a playoff performer, has made the team worse and his line has been very limited in chances at best. He is not even the guy on the power play that has been making it go in the postseason when there has been space, that's been Foxxy, Zibs, and Kreids.

I love him and don't think you can replace his talent, but this team is going for the cup in the next couple of years, $12M to Artie will hold them back.

We bought him out and now he’s working at KFC, hope you guys are happy now.

After the first shift where he made that same throw it at the net thing for an easy turnover twice, he did play better. He was skating, trying to cycle, making passes that had a decent chance at success, etc.

It seems like Panarin has finally read this message board. He was much smarter with the puck. He even used his skating to challenge a defender once or twice.

In the future, I could see him playing with Chytil and a grinding winger. Chytil is good at gaining the offensive zone and has recently shown an improved battle-level for pucks. Panarin will need that help as he ages.

He was the Rangers best player last night, that play he made to start the sequence that Strome botched was vintage. Would have been a signature moment for him as a Ranger.
Where has this Panarin been? He finally stepped out of his office and worked the entire o-zone. Two more games to do that against Tampa.

The only positive that could possibly come out of that moment is Panarin realizing how much of a complete loser Strome is so he doesn't suffer a complete emotional breakdown when Drury breaks the news to him this offseason that his best friend isn't coming back.

My knee-jerk reaction with how he played this playoffs is ask if he'll waive and send him wherever for whatever... 11.6 million a year, 2nd highest paid player in the league you better produce like it.... come playoff time he didnt come close to that level. And frankly the numbers wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the atrocious pond hockey and mindless giveaways we saw.

That being said, when he's on his game hes a gamebreaking, franchise level winger, one of the best in the game so he's a real asset. But theres a real accountability issue here and Im a little shocked GG hasn't really addressed it yet. All season long egregious turnover after turnover, predictable low percentage play after play, at some point the coach has to bench the guy, scratch him, demote him... something! When the guy simplifies things and starts playing the right way, getting it deep, making the smart plays, all that cute shit starts to open back up. We saw that happen more than a few times this playoff run.

Gallant/someone has to straighten the damn guy out because you just cannot pay a guy 11.6 million dollars to do what we saw this year. Maybe a solution is stack that top line with Zib and CK and move Panarin to the right side, something to try and get him out of these bad habits
