Terrific news if true.

Will sing Dorion's praises if he makes it happen.
Let's hope it gets done.. vs We made what we thought was a fair offer but the player ultimately has to want to stay rather than go test the market which is his right.

The 2 year deal initially is still a head scratcher

FWIW, apparently that was the “plan” with the agent when he signed here.

Get him to free agency ASAP.

Hopefully great news. I remember when Zub first came i had no idea who he was but figured he was going to be replacing Jaros in the #6 spot after learning a bit of English, the system, and gaving the coaches confidence he knew what they wanted from him. Now we can pay him fairly and keep him i hope.

I am not sure this has ever been confusing. If I am Zub or his agent I would have done the exact same thing. If you believe in your abilities why not get to UFA as quickly as possible. I don't blame Dorion or the Sens management at all as I am sure Zub's camp made it clear buying UFA years would cost a considerable amount.

I’ve been told by several posters that it was due to Dorion’s incompetence.
Well Dorion said something to the effect that JBD/Thomson would be ready to replace him...not sure of the exact wording. So that probably has something to do with a negative reaction towards Dorion and he wasn't exactly riding a wave.

Is it unreasonable to expect two players you used 1st round picks on to be able to step into the NHL when they're both 22/23 years old?

At that time they likely had higher hopes for both of those guys. Today it seems clear that neither one will be a quality NHL player.

I think it was pretty clear that Zub was a keeper but that is probably moot if the deal was cooked in from the start.
At that time it would have taken a lot of rose colored glasses projection imo

Was my number 1 ranked priority.

It will also likely mean the next addition we have on D can only cost us about 4 million unless we are moving on from DeBrincat.
If Sanderson continues to develop well, I honestly believe that Chabot, Zub and Sanderson will be a better top 3 than what most teams have, we just need a steady #4. A guy like Mayfield or Jensen could come relatively cheap.
