When the biggest hole on your team is a top 4 d and it is right under your nose, you have to make a solid offer.
If not, Zub will get it in spades from other teams vying for his skillset.

What's with this patience stuff? We've needed a top-4 D forever and PD was supposed to get one this summer or early fall. I'm saying if he had any irons in the fire now would be a good time to pull something off. I don't think letting this shallow af defense corps get shelled in their end for the foreseeable future is the way to go at this point.

Its the part where the team is 13th in the conference and every core player on the team is 25 and under. The teams two most promising players are 20 years old. Over paying right now when the team isnt making the playoffs makes no sense. Not to mention teams know they are desperate so they have no leverage. Also the team is for sale, this wont be Dorions vision come next season.

You are correct that the Zbad trade did not turn out well. But, it also doesn't mean that the other GMs won't see Dorion coming either.

The Zibby deal is a poor example of a trade made in haste with zero options as it was done in the off season.

I think what the poster is getting at is if there is a deal to be made for say Chychrun where you have to slightly overpay then do it when you can rather than wait for him to be dealt somewhere else. Since defensemen are so hard to find then you should be looking all year round and if someone becomes avaliable and other GMs see you coming it might make sense to just make the deal.

I think if a deal is done it will be in the summer BUT we have wasted a few offseasons now without jumping at a target. Perhaps that is just the price for defensemen and you just have to pay it. Now is probably the hardest time to make a deal in general but if a defensemen shakes loose then the sens may want to finally pay the price

What makes me hesitant is the assets that it would require, and the LD versus RD thing. If I'm giving up a lot of assets, I sure would prefer being comfortable with the LD versus RD aspect.

As far as assets, I'm thinking that it would need to be a 1st, good prospect and player at a minimum as this is traditional. Not sure whether the Yotes GM agrees.

The 1st might be 2023 top 5 protected if we are lucky. I doubt they'd want our 2024. We can hope. Would have to guess that the prospect would have to be Grieg. Not many other choices. Not sure what player, but if a player didn't work, then maybe one of our lesser prospects. Can't see it being any less, but who knows.

If we were to include Zaitsev, then we need to add more assets on our side. That would make it really, really expensive.

and without them they're 3-9-1.
