If he scores 40 next year, I am giving him 9 million with absolute ease and I am going to sleep the most comfiest man.
Sure, understand that, but it would be what you give to the rest of roster (20 to 22) players that would move it from the hypothetical. Some/many of the players have multi-year contracts, so I suppose some of the necessary detail is already filled in (unless the player is subtracted of course).

Debrincat is not a 9M player regardless of his QO. If he wants more than 8M you move him.
If he gets 40 goals and around 80ish points, yes he is.

And even if he wasn't, overpaying slightly for a top line winger is better than not having him at all.

I think the team knows what Zub is.

Another 40 games helps them know what they have in Brannstrom, Thomson and JBD

The team has already said that they think Brannstrom has another step and someone posted he's put on good weight

That’s the problem with Zub. Branny’s easily capable of evolving into this teams 3D. His ceiling is much higher than Zub’s.

That pushes Zub to a 4D and we still don’t have an elite defender.

Sanderson is going to be that player

I hope so … I have zero doubt he’ll skate, transition, and drive play. I’m not convinced he will be one of the leagues best pure defenders. He’ll have to fill out if he’s going to move more then then puck around.

Yep same as Branny, who also needs a growth spurt.

This is actually a good opportunity for debate

I think my tiers were adequately representative of player value (but debatable)

Tier 1 : Stutzle, DeBrincat, Chabot : 9 M$

Tier 2 : Tkachuk, Norris, Batherson : 8 M$

So you're basically saying that DeCat is more on Tkachuk/Norris level?

Ideally, he doesn't score too much this season (lol?) and it doesn't cost over 8 M$ to sign him long term

Edit : I guess this conversation could be moved to the thread named "Predicting Ottawa's RFA/UFA Contracts"

He has been filling out pretty well. Draft weight was 185, no combine that year so unconfirmed but it looks like he has added a lot of muscle since the draft. Wouldn't be surprised around 195 heading into camp and there's room for him to grow.

Getting a bit off topic here, but Sanderson, and by extension, Zub, don't need to be particularly big to be elite defensive players, guys like Hjalmarsson (6'3 197), Vlasic (6'1 205), Keith (6'1 192), Lidstrom (6'2 190), and Niedermayer (6' 200) all used their skating and hockey IQ to be elite defenders. Sanderson has a frame that looks like it will fill out well, I suspect he's going to be around 200-205 as his ideal weight.

No individual dman needs to be big … but someone needs to (as as DJ would say) keep guys of the goalie.

This D group doesn’t have a guy who can move anyone… Hamonic is the closest thing we have.

He was listed at 189 for dev camp, that's with likely missing out on a lot of upper body work while his wrist recovered.

I missed that, thanks. Should be coming into camp a little heavier than that still but probably not quite 195.

Sanderson is a skinny dude … who’s going to make 1-2D money becuase of his legs and IQ.. Zubb ain’t a heavy lifter and people want to pay him $5… who’s going to play the hard 17 min a night ?

Both those guys will be perfectly capable of playing tough mins just like the numerous Dmen I listed were. No coach ever worried about putting out guys like Vlasic, Hjalmarsson, Keith, Lidstrom, or Niedermayer for tough mins. Those were the first guys hoping over the boards when they needed to kill a penalty or shut down the oppositions best and none of them were particularly big. We'll be fine.

He just turned 20. I've seen him listed at 6 foot 3. If that's true, 205 to 210 would be on the lighter side for guys that height. He's definitely going to be above average size wise

Friedman says he personally thinks there’s a ton going on behind the scenes to get the arena deal done and clear up any lawsuits incurred by Eugene in the previous years. Also mentioned he believes they’re trying to get Zub signed next

Signing Zub would be huge.

I still truly believe he has complementary top pairing potential similar to that of Dennis Seidenberg. An integral piece to our top 4 and critical player in a cup run. Even if we do get Chychrun, and can't afford to keep Zub in a couple years, would be incredibly easy to trade.

I called re-signing Zub as priority number 1 this off-season, above all else. Still stand by that if we head into the season not acquiring someone like Chychrun.

I'd say it was definitely more important than extending Stutzle even. You knew Stutzle was going to get his bridge or 8 year contract completely depending on his desire, Ottawa would take the longest term he would give and it'd be done.

Zub meanwhile, is a chess game to sign.

Feels like they're trying to say, "listen, we have all the pieces in piece now, you're the last one we need to be a real team, this is how many dollars makes sense, take it or leave it."

Hopefully they're not lowballing on term or dollars (e.g. <3M or <2 years) with the whole, "we have two capable young D coming up that make you replaceable.

I hope the team signs Zub for 4 or 5 years at about $4.5M AAV. He is a solid defensive defenceman who can complement Chabot and Sanderson on the top 2 D pairs. However he is not a #1 D and likely never will be worth what those two D will get. If we sign him, we can hope Bernard-Docker or Thomson continue to develop into complementary top 4 D players to fill the remaining position sometime this coming season or next.

Not as rookies - Sanderson isn’t going to be moving bodies this year . He’s going to be treading water in his own end and impressing us with some skating and puck movement.

Idk what lawsuits are outstanding other than the Ruddy one. It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out
