Why? They were this years' bad guy as soon as they traded Stewart to make the big splash at the deadline. I love it when the league is reminded that the game is never won in the offseason or in the GM's office.

Not the team, the fans, or at least the ones who aren't also Cardinals fans.

I never understood why the Blues traded for Miller, when they needed scoring a lot more. I would have gone after Kesler, or preferably Vanek. Heck, even Matt Moulson.

Blues are cursed.

I'm not going to argue with you. Every team you pointed to drafted inside the top 10 multiple times immediately before their Cup runs. You can twist that however you want, I really don't care. It doesn't make it to away. It happened. LA: 2, 4, 5. ANA: 2, 7, 9. BOS: 5, 8. It happened. However you want to manipulate those FACTS, it took place. The teams won cups AFTER those drafts. The Rangers highest pick in god knows how long was 10th and everyone who is still actually competing, let alone has a chance at the Cup, in these playoffs has drafted higher. Those are facts.

This entire conversation began because your holier than thou attitude took exception with me simply ADMIRING the wealth of young forwards Colorado has, mere minutes after MacKinnon scored his 10th point of the playoffs, and making a sarcastic joke about Nash. It's not like I posted a ****ing topic about how we need to tank like Colorado. This website has gone to such trash in the past few years. There is literally nothing here but abrasive ******. I visit less and less and then inevitably come back when the itch to talk about hockey gets too strong and each time I regret bothering. By this time next year I won't be surprised if I've just blocked the URL entirely.

LA 2: Drew Doughty
LA 4: Thomas Hickey
LA 5: Brayden Schenn -> Mike Richards

One cornerstone to the cup run, one trade that turned into a very nice piece.

ANA 2: Bobby Ryan
ANA 7: Joffrey Lupul
ANA 9: Ladislav Smid

Ryan hadn't played yet. Lupul and Smid were traded for Chris Pronger, who was of course a huge part of that cup run.

BOS 5: Phil Kessel -> Tyler Seguin
BOS 7: Zach Hamill

Seguin was a healthy scratch for half of the cup run. While he played a role, it's hard to say that it's one only fulfilled by a high draft pick.

Halak was just as good for their system. Too bad. The Hawks are still the class of the league. I said months ago it's gonna be a repeat of BOS/CHI.

Miller is a fine trade as long as you are not trading away starting skaters. A good goalie being swapped for a great one (which Miller is) does not change your system. I'm a big believer in the idea that, when you are having a season like the Blues were having, you do NOT shake things up. AT ALL. Yea, Ott for Stewart looks all gravy on paper, but that is not how hockey works. Callahan for St. Louis the way the Rangers are constructed? Yea... go for it. But when you are 41-14-6 in the toughest division in hockey, you don't change ANYTHING. Nothing is wrong. Nothing has to be tinkered with. Even taking one guy out... you don't know what that's going to do. Immediately after they went 6-0-1 and it seemed all good. But that was against some bad teams. 5-9 to finish, including a 6 game losing streak, and this playoff whimper should be very telling.

(I know it's ironic for a Ranger fan to hate the idea of the top team making a trade deadline splash considering the 1994 trades... but I think Neil Smith had 1992 to look at as an example that the Rangers really needed to toughen up for a true Cup run, and he was right)

You guys are over analyzing this. The west is just a ridiculous conference. The fact that Chicago is the 3 best team in that division is mind-blowing. Not to mention you still have Anaheim and San Jose to battle it out in the other. STL - CHI could have easily been a conf final game. Who ever comes out of the west alive will be tough to beat. I cant remember a conf being a strong as the west is this year.

My point was really that when you factor in the teams whose core is legitimately comprised of multiple top five picks, it's very, very difficult to find a contending team that hasn't gone through a period of drafting inside the top 10 to get them to contention. If Detroit and Boston are the outliers, so be it. Those aren't very good odds though and the reality is that without one or two young, controllable elite talents from the draft it's going to be hard for this team to get out of the cycle or Gomez, Drury, Redden, Gaborik, Richards, Nash, St. Louis - elite guys nearing or beyond their expiration date aren't ever going to get it done.

I don't think Chicago is actually only the third best team in that division though. I think they cruised in the regular season and they also rested Toews and Kane at the end of the year. Even with all that they only finished five points out of first. Plus, the Avalanche are overrated. Colorado is young and talented, but as a team they really performed over their heads this year. I expect whoever comes out of COL-MIN to have their lunch money taken by the Blackhawks pretty easily.

Really felt like the Blues could make a deep run, but Chicago is a brutal first round matchup. The West is stacked.

The Hawks next tough series will be the conference finals.

Do feel for the Blues, tough way to go out. Tough first round matchup.

But the Blackhawks are just the class of the league. As a team they encompass everything great about the sport. Pittsburgh who?

Well, on the matchup, no sympathy there from me. They could've secured the 1st spot in their division (heck, the conference) with a somewhat normal streak in the last 10 regular season games, but they failed miserably. Make your own luck.

What Chicago did there in period 3 looked like a demonstration of power though. I know there's been a lot of factors coming together to make it look that way and the Blues were the better team over 2 periods, but god damn, they seemed to score at will. I expect no more than 5 games against COL/MIN.

Why would I want popcorn for something as nauseatingly embarrassing as that would turn out?

Actually making it that far would so far exceed my expectations I'd probably be high on life for a month anyway.

Good grief...it wouldnt be that bad. Give the team some credit. We did beat the hawks earlier this year.

Yea I mean fair points - should have clarified I meant from a fan perspective. Well built team, Presidents trophy contender...then the wheels fall off down the stretch after acquiring the "final piece" at the deadline. Injuries hurt too, Blues were banged up. And then having to face a Hawks team coming together at the right time is just a kick down below.
