Even now I still think it's largely reliant on chemistry with Panarin and being fed ice time but we'll see over the course of a full season I suppose.

I haven’t checked myself but seems to me I read somewhere that his underlying numbers aren’t very good

Only took 8 years and his 3rd team to be worth his 5th overall selection.

As for Edmonton, like mentioned with Drai (and McDavid) and their +/-, they are on pace to shatter the regular season points totals for the 2000's yet are a whopping -3 and +2 respectively. That is ****ing pathetic when you're 20+ points up on a ppg page after 34 games. As they play on the same line one could conclude they play horrible defence and you could also conclude the winning was never sustainable. Lindholm last year broke his points totals with 78 and he was a +30. McDrai are on pace for 130 points and to be in the negatives or slightly positive.

I was interested in Strome before and after Edmonton. I thought he'd be a perfect passenger to JG and Monahan and he'd be cheap to acquire cost wise and I thought contract wise at the time we'd be able to lock him down for something reasonable too.

Feels like Arizona have been moving their own big names every season now for a while. What could they possibly send now for Hall?

Also not sure why St. Louis is even remotely interested.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to be McDavid. You’re the best player of your generation. You’re a combination of Crosby and Bure, a coaches literally wet dream.

But your team, oh your team. You play with probably, by far, the best German born player of all time. The rest of the team though: irredeemable garbage. Year after year. For a decade. It’s how they acquired you, infact. Ineptitude.

To be fair, they’re probably a 1OA pick away from being a top team and a dynasty.

I really don't think it is about the quality of players. It is the culture. The high picks walk into the line-up while the organization does nothing to support the development of the other drafted players. There is not attention to detail by any of the players. Everybody in Edmonton expects the Oilers to win on skill and goal scoring rather than teamwork, hard work, and attention to detail. Chiasson, Russell and Granlund were all players the organization moved on from seasons ago yet the Oilers are built on them.

My personal view on the problem in Edmonton is that there is no team. There are a few stars and then placeholders holding spots. This has been the case since Hall was drafted and it is that sense of entitlement and tiered inclusion in Edmonton that kills there organization. Until Edmonton becomes a team rather than a few individuals they will suck.

I said it before, and I'll say it again.

The Oilers should trade McDavid for a Lindros-esque return.

Young, physical centre (Mike Ricci)
Top pair defenseman (Steve Duchesne)
Young middle pair defenseman (Kerry Huffman)
Proven #1 goalie (Ron Hextall)
Top forward prospect (Peter Forsberg)
Power forward prospect (Chris Simon)

If they could get most of those pieces in return for a trade, it would change the entire team dynamic.

Kind of agree, although trades like that probably don't work in the salary cap world anymore. Also I'd trade Draisaitl instead, he's really good but maybe not "2nd best forward in the NHL" good on his own. So he's in a sell high situation right now.

Hope they do nothing though!

Trying to think of a team that could make it work is kind of hard.
Montreal comes to mind, but the cap is just f***ed:

Max Domi
Shea Weber
Victor Mete
Carey Price
Cole Caufield
? - Dunno

Philly maybe:

Travis Konecny (not a C, but plays with a chip)
Ivan Provorov
Philippe Myers
Carter Hart
Nolan Patrick
Morgan Frost

Dunno. It guts another franchise for sure.

McDavid is great and all, but I don't think Philly would do that. More and more this is a game about deep rosters, and the Philly deal guts them out of contention imo.

Montreal deal is hard to say cause of the age on some of those guys. Shitload of cap too.

My wet dream is Matthews walks in FA for Arizona and then Toronto vastly overpays to acquire McDavid for his two remaining seasons and then when they suck due to their lack of depth McDavid walks from Toronto as a FA as well
