Thomas won the Cup in game 7 with an out-of-this-world .940 playoff save percentage.
Rask is called a playoff choker by many idiots here for a Stanly Cup Finals game 6 loss where he also had a .940 playoff save percentage (against better teams, like stacked Pens, Lightning and Blackhawks teams).
The difference came down to: Bruins players couldn't score easy, obvious goals. We're talking goalie-beat, net wide open and they couldn't tap it into a wide open 4x6. If Jagr and Seguin were taking up top6 spots on the 2011 Bruins and couldn't score a single goal then the Canucks likely win in 6 and Thomas isn't a local legend.
I'm a Rask fan, and I don't call him a playoff choker - it's a team game. But I understand where that stigma is coming from.
Save percentages aside, and fairly or unfairly, the blown 3-0 series lead against Philly is on Rask's resume. And while he had stellar moments in the Final against Chicago, the Hawks put up 6 in Game 4 in Boston, when the Bruins could've taken a 3-1 series lead.
And Game 6 isn't all on Rask, but remember that was only two years after Thomas willed the team to victories the fan base had grown accustomed to losing. Blowing that game at home still stings.
The overtime of Game 7 against Montreal in 2011 could've ended much sooner with a Habs victory were it not for Thomas, and he had two shutouts in Game 7's in the Conference Final and the Final. Tampa put up impressive goal totals in the series, but when the series was on the line, Thomas was perfect, in a game for the ages. Then came the shutout in Vancouver, Game 7, when the Bruins were outshot 37-21.
I'm a big fan of both Thomas and Rask. Numbers aside, the difference is Thomas put the team on his back and brought home the prize; Tuukka hasn't yet, though he's had opportunities. Like starting pitchers, it's not always fair, but wins and losses are tagged on goalies.
