I think about whether I am sympathetic.....then think about the number of times the Habs broke my heart....and have zero compassion for them.

I only hope that the years where they are positioned for a top draft choice are years without a generational talent.

All kidding aside I feel bad for Habs fans.

What a mess today but their future looks bleak for a few years

The Price & Weber cap hit when they are 38 and 41 years old respectively is over $18 M

This GM Bergevin sold out the Habs for today and they still are a mess

I don't want to see them win a Cup but seeing a franchise I grew up respecting spending years in the top of the draft board not something I'm used to

Doesn't matter, they have their Québécois poster boy now so all is good up there.

Good point

The REAL Pittsburgh model was 5 years of suckage and they picked

5,1,2,1,2

The Habs may not get a Crosby or Malkin or pass on Toews but they would likely get a few good guys

Clode benching Kessel for Jeremy Reich in game 1 the Bruins would lose in overtime of a 7 game series should have got Claude fired but with Lewis one and done you can't be paying 2 coaches ;)

I beat that drum for years. But the lemmings here never seemed to grasp how incredibly idiotic a move it was. The irony is that his choice took the penalty in late in the third or in OT that cost them that game, IICRC.

The Claude apologists never even admitted it was a moronic move. Instead, they made excuses for why he did it. That was a big part of the problem during his time here. He'd do something stupid like Campbell on down a goal with a minute left, and a percentage of the people here would say he didn't have a better option. They enabled his nonsense for years.

The most hilarious thing I've read all summer here is the stuff on Montreal. All the Claude apologists who said this team wins nothing without out, top 3 coach in the league, he got his Bruins teams to overachieve have all turned on him. Now, all his "greatness" most assuredly won't have any bearing on where the Habs finish this year because they are such a "mess".

I had mixed feelings on Claude pretty much the whole time he was with the Bruins. There is one thing though that has clarified things for me, In my gut , I am not at all threatened by the fact that he now coaches the team I most cheer for to fail.

that's the kicker with the Habs, Bergevin is making moves like he's in "win now" mode but the team is still mediocre and now their pipeline is gutted.

If there is one fan base that I will never feel sorry for it is the Montreal Canadiens fan base. There are a few more ( Yankees, Maple Leafs, Canucks, Blue Jays and Lakers ) but the Canadiens are definitely at the top of my list.

It's hard to really respect their success over the past years, one should always consider circumstances. Winning Stanley with later rounds picks, good scouting, excellent development programs, smart trading moves, that reflects a properly built organisation from top to bottom.

I hope they are bad enough to suck and barely make the playoffs but not so bad that they get a decent first round pick. In other words, have them be like the Bruins during most of their 29 year playoff 'streak'

Sadly they will be putrid like Chicago and Pittsburgh and get loads of top 10 picks

They could screw up though

Chicago missed on Barker at 3 and Skille at 7 during their years of single digit picks but did get Kane and Toews

Pittsburgh was extremely fortunate to get Malkin at 2 and Syd the next year but in 2006 did pass on Toews and took Jordan Staal

Pittsburgh could have walked away with Fleury Malkin Crosby and Toews

Chicago 3 Cups likely in Pittsburgh and probably Boston's and LA's

Not sure Crosby Malkin Toews trio could be beat

It's a model the Canadiens could use

If HF didn't exist I would just assume everybody realized the were horrible they got high picks they bagged some big players

Laws of Life:

Water seeks its own level

3 + 2 = 5

See the ball hit the ball

Suck in hockey draft first or second

That's what the Nordiques did with Nolan, Sundin, Lindros. The Nordiques are quite the study because they survived an All Time top 5 bad trade in Subdin for Wendell Clark. They missed on 3 & 5 one year which would crush most teams but took Sakic right after the Bruins inexplicably took Quintell. And there was that Lindros heist where he wasn't even proven the best player in the deals.

Brilliant hockey minds like myself just laugh when I read about the Pittsburgh model like signing Conor Sheary makes you a genius

Claude has $25 M

Claude's season ends before his kids April vacation (I'm assuming they get vacations in Canada schools)

Claude will blame Bergevin in a roundabout way but the message will be clear

No centers
No puck movers

Good luck Cah-reee

Clode and Price are the two reasons why the Habs might sneak into the playoffs.
