The 50 contract limit thing is a red herring given the timing of when you need to sign a CHL draftee prior to them re-entering the draft. As long as they had one slot, they could easily have signed him. Or Budik. But, they passed on both. One looks bad in hindsight and one is fine.

And personally, I'm glad that Adams hasn't fallen into the "not my guy" thinking for a large part.

He wasn't re-drafted. Everyone passed on him as an OA, Chicago signed him as UFA.

Still can't Botts refused to sign him when the forward pipeline was a clearly busting Alex Nylander and a bunch of other misfit toys

Another great call by previous Sabres management to let this guy go. Which GM owns this? Lightning sign Brandon Hagel to eight-year, $52M contract extension

Could have been the best thing that ever happened to him.

Hagel is lucky he was able to find his way back to the NHL. Maybe a little butterfly effect here. It's hard to say how much of that experience motivated him and/or contributed to the player he is today.

You hear this stuff all the time in hockey. Wake up calls. We'll never know if he would have found the same success in the Sabres system if they had signed him. Sabres also could have f***ed him up and derailed his career.

Who knows? He could have ended officiating AHL games like Justin Kea.

No he wasn't. He turned out better than expected. But, if you are giving Pekar and Pu ELCs, then they should have given Hagel one. But, he wasn't Botts's guy, so...
I'll just say I agree with the thought of giving him an ELC. It's not exactly like Buffalo had a very deep prospect pool outside the young guys on the main roster already (especially at the forward position) and they really needed as many bodies as possible. I liked Hagel, but his camps were not that impressive for me. He sort of blended in with the rest of the prospects. I had him as a 4th line role player potential based on his time I saw him. I get why Botts did what he did, and there's plenty that I don't like of his tenure, but moving on from Hagel wasn't the biggest red mark on his resume, and plenty of GMs have misses on guys that they probably would do something different about with the power of hindsight.

With every contract signing, Thompsons and Cozens deals keep getting better and better... Its to the point where I chuckle to myself in disbelief

Yup. 7 years of both of those guys for a shade over 14m vs spending ~1m less on Matthews alone for only 4 years? I know which of those scenarios I'd rather be building a team around.

I wonder how many posts on here talked about him leaving for Arizona. Maybe he's waiting for that team to get better first

Matthews will be turning 31 shortly after becoming a UFA.

Based on talk that his agent refused to go longer than 4 years, that term seems calculated to end concurrently with the disappearance of the Leaf's Cup window, while he's still young enough to cash in big on what might possibly be his last contract. Hard to say how productive he'll be after 5 more seasons of wear and tear, or what the cap might be then.
