A lot of people are saying this...gotta admit I'm a little surprised by this sentiment after basically making no significant moves in the offseason, and the roster looking unimpressive on paper. The bottom 6 is still average at best, and the whole team was one of the worst defensive teams in sabres history last year.

I'm glad people are starting to watch buffalo, and see the same promise that we do, but I feel the expectations might be getting a bit too high? We may have only been two points from a playoff spot last season, but usually you'd need more points than that to make the playoffs, and Ottawa should be a lot better this year, etc. I'm not sure how confident we should be.
the nhl subreddit is in love with the sabres.

Yeah, he's probably on the back 9 in his career. They needed to add some scoring and they probably did.

People on the outside aren’t living with 12 years of historic failure seeing the obvious problems on the roster with the near limitless assets to have fixed them.

They’re watching highlights.

We watch games and lack of moves from the front office.

It’s almost as if national analysts not at all invested in the day to day business of a franchise, covering 32 different teams with a passing knowledge of each, aren’t equipped to handle in depth conversation on the subject.

It‘s like taking the opinion of someone who read cliffs notes over someone who read the book because they seem to like it more.
versus taking the opinion of someone who has an emotional investment versus a detached observer

Opening with 12 years of failure is kind of a dead give away that what follows isnt calm and rational thinking.

Your predictions last year were wildly wrong and completely off base. Nearly everything you predicted turned out to be very wrong. You continually framing everything with “12 years…” shows how clouded your judgment is. This is new regime that is showing itself to be very competent with legit results on the ice.

Will fix everything

it Honestly depends on how healthy he is. He's a downgrade from Debrincat. The combo of him and Kubalik gives them decent scoring wing depth though. Norris returning should give them 3 solid lines.

IF (and that is a big if given how injury prone a few of their primary guys seem to be) they stay healthy, they are probably ahead of us in the division. I like our top end skill better, but I think they are better setup to win now.

Well, I just wanted to see him in Buffalo, plus he went to competitors.

Really? I'm totally unimpressed with Ottawa. Seems like more of the same thing they tried to do last year.

I'm not sure how concerned I am with the Sabres Top 6. I think this team is now good enough to cope with the loss of Quinn internally. They did fine with Tage out. Tarasenko as an extra body just takes opportunities away from the next guy up.

Of course, I am going to change my tune quickly if Olofsson starts the year on Cozen's wing.

I think our playoff chances are status quo compared to last season. The teams that regress were really far ahead of us and those that improve were not that far behind.

I love Granato's ability to get the most out of talent but at some point players have to hit ceilings or regress. I think 24/25 will be our playoff season based on the slow cooked talent we will add while other teams regress another notch or two.

Ottawa scored 5 points less than Buffalo, this is a small difference. They also had injuries. In general, if you look at their roster, it looks good.

So far, I'm not happy with Adams in the offseason, he still hasn't solved the problem with goalie, we don't know if Clifton will work in the top 4 and we already had Quinn out due to injury. I have no confidence that we will score more points than last season and advance to the playoffs. Too many risks and if.

Says who? A roster filled with 21-25 year olds on robust growth trajectories is the least likely to regress in the league. Far more likely to continue to see breakout performances that compound to spur even more growth.
I'm mainly thinking about our first line, they were amazing last season.

I disagree with the idea that we can lock in another year of strong performance from the youth if only because results aren't solely contingent on player input. Unexpected down years happen all the time to even the best players for all sorts of reasons within and without their control

which is, of course, why a manager must construct a team with strong depth throughout the lineup. still work to be done there but it's certainly better than last year

incidentally, call me impatient but if the team misses the playoffs this year, I think it's strictly a failure. I can acknowledge different but valid opinions about last year, but at a certain point you need to start actually doing the thing

What youth is this exactly? Peterka is the only variable there. Who else? Krebs? He's not relied upon for offense to a large degree. Quinn is injured for at least half of the season. They reset of the lineup are veterans at this point (with the exception of Power). Basically you are looking for one body to grab that roster spot opened by Quinn. You have Mittlestadt, Greenway, Olofsson (please no) or Krebs that could move up the lineup. Someone from Roch could come in and take a bottom 6 spot.

They also have 5 years of Korpisalo, so ....

I'll cop to being old here but anyone 25 and under that would typically get the "they're in their prie or in their ascendancy don't worry about it" vibe

Which in some seasons plays really very well, although this contract looks bad. But in general, their roster looks competitive and I would not underestimate them.

yrsr to year you will have many variables like injuries, is the whole team hot at once or cold st once or would you like the hot streak moving around

the team is still very young. It will nice if they make the playoffs next year but it’s not the end of the world if they missed.

we have cozens, Krebs, Quinn, Peterka, power, and others thst are not near peak for a few years.

Boston had everything go right year last year while the year before they just got in. Devils had that early hot streak that built up their confidence
ottawa still has D/G question marks.
toronto— even signing Matthews still leaves thrm 3 other F where I only see 1 still being around.

sigh…see above.
