As expected? Um.... what?

Murray cleared concussion protocol and joined the team as their 3rd goalie during the playoffs.

The Maple Leafs are taking an interesting route to offload goaltender Matt Murray

Sounds like EF is officially on the Leafs payroll with this level of media gaslighting

Isn’t he literally being paid by the same company?

Seriously though, the NHL and all other GMs seem fine with it, so it’s probably legit. I actually think they’d prefer to just buy him out since he’ll continue to be a headache if he’s still on the team. Once he’s healthy, they’ll probably just buy him out then…so I don’t really suspect anything untoward is going on here.

Can't happen since he likely comes off IR outside of a buyout window.

If there were no takers via trade, if I'm not mistaken there are two choices:
  1. Buyout - which would be two $2.6M payments over the next two years, while giving him his freedom and allow him to sign with another team.
  2. LTIR - due to his "injuries", where he'd receive his full base salary of $8M for the season.
I'm sure Murray is dealing with some issues given his health history, but according to his last interview - he was healthy and excited about battling next season.

I assume option #2 is best for everyone, because the Leafs don't need to carry the cap hit for an extra year, and as long as Murray is agreeable he could earn his full salary while sipping Mai Tai's in Tahiti until June and try and catch on with a team in 2024.

You're skipping a big part of the story. For one, just because he was available in the playoffs doesn't mean he doesn't have a legit long term injury. The same thing happens with Mark Stone and Kucherov every year. Also, the league doesn't really have any track record of anyone using fake injuries to get onto LTIR -- I don't think it's a thing. Every time someone makes a complaint, they end up looking into it and it's usually found to be legit by independent sources.

You're also forgetting about the part that he will come off LTIR at some point -- this isn't just a decision that affects the 2024 season since he's on a longer term contract. They will still have to buy him out once he's better. So it's more like Option 2, and then option 1. I really don't think it matters whichever way they go, it's all about the same impact.

Odd he said he was going back to Minnesota and then just signs near the end of July.
Exactly... I guess I can understand both sides.

You'd think he'd want to play for a dominate college program that's a favorite to win the national title. On the other hand, there is no doubt he'll get a lot of playing time with the yotes and gain a ton of NHL experience.

Cooley was my favorite player in the 2022 draft so I’m excited he turned pro. If we had drafted Moore instead of Benson I would have been a bit annoyed though. I loved Moore’s development path as the 2C behind Cooley and then moving up next year. But we didn’t…so now I look forward to watching Coyotes games.

A lot of people are saying this...gotta admit I'm a little surprised by this sentiment after basically making no significant moves in the offseason, and the roster looking unimpressive on paper. The bottom 6 is still average at best, and the whole team was one of the worst defensive teams in sabres history last year.

I'm glad people are starting to watch buffalo, and see the same promise that we do, but I feel the expectations might be getting a bit too high? We may have only been two points from a playoff spot last season, but usually you'd need more points than that to make the playoffs, and Ottawa should be a lot better this year, etc. I'm not sure how confident we should be.

I agree on paper they don't look impressive but its nice that the Sabres are getting some recognition instead of being a complete afterthought. I think folks outside the fanbase notice the bright young talent on the roster and that they are only going to get better. I also think most are just excited to see them get into the playoffs.

Crazy how people inside the teams bubble want to talk constantly about Joker, Bryson, and VO and the people outside the bubble are talking about Dahlin, Power, Thompson, and Cozens.

I don’t trust hockey media to know joker, Bryson, and VO but it always seems the way. The people inside want to focus on the weak spots and the people outside talk about how high the bright spots can be.

People on the outside aren’t living with 12 years of historic failure seeing the obvious problems on the roster with the near limitless assets to have fixed them.

They’re watching highlights.

We watch games and lack of moves from the front office.

It’s almost as if national analysts not at all invested in the day to day business of a franchise, covering 32 different teams with a passing knowledge of each, aren’t equipped to handle in depth conversation on the subject.

It‘s like taking the opinion of someone who read cliffs notes over someone who read the book because they seem to like it more.
