Lou is hilariously bad. How many 4th liners do the Islanders need on long term deals?

Isles are gonna be so bad this year...total regression..everyone is a a year older with no talent upgrades in the off-season...that 4th line is going to fall apart

The thing is, they’re not going to put the toothpaste back in the tube after covid. Ad creep has been going on for the better part of the last decade, and it’s going to continue. Ads on the glass, ads below the goal line, ads between whistles, ads on practice jerseys, and now ads on helmets. Game jerseys will be next and probably other areas of the ice as well.
This isn't opportunistic. This is out of pure necessity.

I'm not sure people fully appreciate the severity of the current economic situation. All NHL operations run and are funded as if there's $5B of revenue. A large majority of HRR comes from tickets, merchandise and concession. What's the revenue for 2021 going to look like? $1.5B? $2B? Falling this far short, is catastrophic...

Cap will be at or around $81.5M until revenue 'normalizes' and all debts are paid ( ie players paying out the ass in escrow ) There's a major liquidity issue right now for all teams, all leagues.

Owners want us all to think that there wont be fans in the rinks this year, maybe thats true in canada but i guarantee there will be some amount of fans in rinks around the league by the mid point of the season.

I don’t doubt it at all. And honestly I’ll never buy a jersey with an ad on it. But I see the necessity of it and it’s just the nature of the beast at this point.

Im ok with ads as long as they arent on the jerseys. Put them on helmets, pants, gloves, skates whatever but the jersey should never have one on it because im paying money for a rangers jersey, im not advertising for Huggies.

i don't think the owners know what to think. I think the would love to sell tickets and fill the arenas.

I see the outrage on Twitter over this and it seems so stupid. We have so many things sponsored. Foxwoods Final Five. Papa Johns things. Etc. For the divisions, anything "official" during broadcasts--graphics, prepared statement, all that--will mention the names but in casual conversation no one is going to say the name. Sam and Joe aren't going to pause to make sure they're saying the proper sponsor every time they mention the Northeast Division. It's silly. I know some people don't like the corporatization and I understand that, but this is no big deal. And it comes at a time when the NHL is hurting for revenue, so it's fine by me.

Entire leagues and teams in the rest of the world have sponsors in their names. It is such a minor thing to name the divisions, and it's probably a temporary thing anyway while the league looks to make up for revenue shortfalls.

fans scream that the nhl doesn't do things to increase revenue...but then also complain when the league does anything to generate more revenue. I get not wanting ads on jerseys cause it changes the visuals but who cares about division names..

Wishful thinking. The shorter season suits them better. They can bore other teams to death even more effectively to start the season while teams are getting up to speed. I think they’re gonna be a playoff team.

With some of these trade requests coming up, you might want to read It's the Manager by Jim Clifton. I'm not pointing at the coach or GM here. When your organization's hierarchy is a little old school with the captains or cliques acts as de facto managers... you aren't going to keep those stars happy.

An apex predator wasn't born to be subjugated by his peers. They will not stick around. No athlete that can carry a team wants to wait their turn or get the kiddie treatment. Happens in other professions all the time. Then the company loses money (or games in this case), and management wonders what's going on.

Stewie was talking about this on Hockey Central. Sportsnet's really turned that show around with him, Bourney and Burkie. Still have a ways to go with repeat questions from time to time.

I think there’s what they’d like and what’s realistic. Vaccination is going to be a really important factor in getting fans back in the arenas this year, and so far it’s going way too slowly.

Jerseys that are sold to fans wouldn't have those sponsorships on them. Look at international teams. Team USA jerseys for instance, don't have a Chipotle patch on the sleeves, and team Finland jerseys don't have a Finnair patch

I respect Matt Martin as a player but with the flat cap, that seems like a silly commitment for a guy who is good for 10 points, regardless of what else he does.

He's a vital component on the best 4th line in the league.
They have mad chemistry, shut teams down and score in key moments.
You really think the extra 500k isn't worth it?

Full disclosure- I read the Matt Martin signing news on the nhl network scroller and initially saw it as 4 years 15 million dollars. Which is why I was shocked to see that the move was not being universally panned.

turns out it was 4 years at 1.5 mil a year lol. Still not a great deal but not the abomination the other would have been.

I take the WJC with a grain of salt, but I’ll tell you what I liked after watching most games: Really not impressed with prospects from a team with three first round picks in the past draft. That would be the devs.

At the moment I’m just happy they didn’t get a Drysdale, Lundell or Perfetti. Of course things can change but let’s hope not.

I thought Mercer was good?
