I understand why Andersson was moved to LA, but they're stockpiled on center prospects. No idea how he cracks that lineup unless he suddenly becomes amazing or suddenly manages to be a 4C.

Not the best team to go to as a center. Maybe he can pan out as a 3-4W.

I see the outrage on Twitter over this and it seems so stupid. We have so many things sponsored. Foxwoods Final Five. Papa Johns things. Etc. For the divisions, anything "official" during broadcasts--graphics, prepared statement, all that--will mention the names but in casual conversation no one is going to say the name. Sam and Joe aren't going to pause to make sure they're saying the proper sponsor every time they mention the Northeast Division. It's silly. I know some people don't like the corporatization and I understand that, but this is no big deal. And it comes at a time when the NHL is hurting for revenue, so it's fine by me.

Entire leagues and teams in the rest of the world have sponsors in their names. It is such a minor thing to name the divisions, and it's probably a temporary thing anyway while the league looks to make up for revenue shortfalls.

I don’t care, but no, nobody gives up revenue. They’re here to stay. Look at college bowl games. Somewhere buried in the name is the original “Sugar Bowl” designation, etc

The same people are not facing the same catastrophic revenue shortfalls. If you're starving for liquidity, you will take money from anyone.

I fully expect to see more ads on the Ice and Jersey. Taco Bell Tuesday Game of the Week type stuff as well

You could be right, but you never know. The Premier League was called the Barclays' Premier League (among other things historically) up until a few years ago when the English FA decided they wanted something more "pure." I imagine that sponsorship was worth a ton.

It was £40m a year in the final 3 years (final contract). Before that it was £27m

Sky and BT forked over £5.1B for the broadcast rights which made the Barclays contract seem like peanuts and they decided not to extend it in, I think, 2018.

But they already sellout their jerseys, etc

We need money so that we don't have a flat cap from here to eternity. I'm more than fine with pimping ourselves out to try to recoup some lost revenue.

And the NHL has already begun with sponsorships on helmets. I mean, I can think of countless situations where teams/leagues had sponsors and dropped them, forewent naming rights deals for stadiums, whatever. But I don't really care about this enough to fight over it, so, I guess we'll just see.

And it doesn't bother me either way, even if it's permanent.

The thing is, they’re not going to put the toothpaste back in the tube after covid. Ad creep has been going on for the better part of the last decade, and it’s going to continue. Ads on the glass, ads below the goal line, ads between whistles, ads on practice jerseys, and now ads on helmets. Game jerseys will be next and probably other areas of the ice as well.
