Rask is a weirdo man

like he can he can opt out, it’s his right, but making those comments then bailing? Yikes

Just read that he has a newborn at home.

I get it. If your heart isn't really in it and your mind is somewhere else, hes probably doing these guys a favor by not playing.

This bubble shit isn't going to work beyond the playoffs. We're going to have to wait until this virus is under control for next season to start.

Very bizarre that it gets announced a little over an hour before game time. I mean sure it was probably brought up much sooner, at least you hope he didn’t wait until like this morning to bring it up, but thats just a stinger for B’s nation.

Now we gotta hope Halak can take down the Canes.

Yeahhh going home to his newborn is totally cool. I get that.

Rask is still a weirdo though

I often forget that Aaron Ekblad was the #1 overall pick in the 2014 draft. Is he considered a meh pick at this point? I feel like D-men picked first overall aren't very reliable.

I always thought it was kind of odd that this doesn’t happen more often since players don’t get paid for the playoffs

Strictly speaking, that’s not true. For one thing, while I’m not sure of the exact scale, each player who played for a team eliminated in the qualifiers gets $20k. More for making later rounds. Theres always a playoff pool.

Beyond that, the revenue generated in the playoffs is part of the revenue split. They might not get regular paychecks in the playoffs, but they are getting paid for them. I say might not because I’m not sure how NHL paycheck work. I know, in some places, salaried teachers can choose between getting larger checks during the school year and no pay in the summer, or smaller checks all year long.

Yeah I know they get bonuses but it’s relatively not a lot compared to their actual salaries.

This brings to mind another question: are players even contractually obligated to play during the post-season?

Players are contractually obligated to participate in any NHL events. It’s why players get suspended for not playing in the all star game and can’t opt out of the World Cup. The ability to opt out of the RTP was specifically negotiated.

They aren't. I really don't feel defenseman or goalies should be taken in the top ten. Seems like most don't return that kind of value. Perhaps because those positions require a lot more development post draft.

I know it's not an in vogue opinion but I like Tim Thomas a lot more than Tukka Rask.

This tournament is becoming harder to take seriously when you see things like this. Very good teams putting zero effort in and being upset by bad teams. Star players just going thru the motions and Rasks comments before leaving I mean how many guys feel this way? That these just feel like exhibition games.

I mean going from 4 months off straight into a playoff series is crazy and it’s showing.

Whatever your feelings about Rask leaving, there's likely more than a few teammates that feel like he's quitting on them. I wouldn't be surprised if a trade is explored.

Ekblad physically matured really early. Injuries have hampered him at the NHL level, but its almost the same exact "trap" that St Louis fell into with Erik Johnson.

This would be my concern with Byfield. That the separation from his peers is exaggerated by the fact that he’s 4 inches and 40 pounds bigger than they are, right now.

yAh I have zero problem with players opting out that’s their right during all this. I have the issue with his comments post game after a loss. Telling the media he doesn’t care out the results of a playoff game since they feel like dull exhibition games. Hasn’t trained in months. I mean go home but keep that to yourself or within the organization. That was completely unprofessional and disrespectful to what this playoff is and to his teammates busting their asses to win

Ekblad has a great rookie season, then as you said, injuries hampered him a lot but he seems to have surged forward again recently. Probably one of few bright spots under contract in Florida. After 39 points as a rookie, he never reached 39 again, but this year he had 41 in 67. He’s still 24. He’s a career +29 on a pretty meh team. He should be entering his prime. I think he can still be a “pretty good” 1 overall.

hes already pretty good. He’s been pretty good since he started.

he’ll continue to be pretty good but I’d be surprised if he’s anymore than that.
