More ex NHLers should do shoot videos like retired pro wrestlers. The drama keeps interest in the sport alive.

I may have mentioned it before but this 24 seed playoff idea reminds me of the NHL in the late 70s/early 80s playoff format which was changed in 1982 when it was divisional.

In the late 70s-1981 format, 1 played 16, 2 played 15, 3 played 14 ,etc.

So for example the Rangers playoff opponents each year:

1978: Buffalo
1979: Philly/LA/NYI/MTL
1980: ATL/Philly
1981: LA/STL/NYI

So looking at some chart and with byes for divisional winners, it looks like a "rematch" of 1980 at this point with a best of three Rangers vs. Calgary. That would be a fun series.

(Edit) I guess I can’t embed a Facebook video. Max Domi trains at home ping pong

max Domi trains at home

Wonder when will we see Marc Staal’s video?

That reminds me. That 1981 playoff run to the ECF was a heck of a fun ride for those of us around at the time.

Somehow with friggen Steve Baker between the pipes we beat heavily favored LA and St.Louis both teams who had well over 30+ points than us in the regular season and we beat them fairly handily as well which shocked the shit out of most of us. We were like where the F did this shit come from as we blew chunks in the regular season finishing with a 30-36 record...something like that.

The party and the tease unfortunately ended in the ECF where we got our asses handed to us by the f'ng Islanders as they swept us in 4. But still 1980-81 is one of those unsung no one talks about years in Ranger history that ended up being a hell of a fun ride for peeps like me who were around at the time.

As far as the 1-16 format...I really don't like it. Too many weird matchups for my taste.

That said I dislike immensely the current playoff format. Give me the old 1-8 playoff format like it used to be and I'm a happy camper.

I was three months old when that run started so I can't say I enjoyed it. Listening to interviews and watching games on YouTube of both the LA and STL series, I think the Rangers were a much better team then their record was that year, they had a lot of injuries and tuned out Shero. They lost Tzachuk in Jan I think when a puck hit his eye. That was it for him. Esposito also retired mid-season. Craig Patrick came in to coach and restored order.

That was a very tough Rangers team with guys like Hospodar and Kostopolous if I remember. Plus guys like Dugauy could hold their own. Beck was a beast. LA was a total finesse team as were the Blues, so the Rangers just pounded them both into submission.

Your right...that '81 Ranger team was better than their record showed. The problem with that team was it's goaltending but for 10 games or so which just so happened to be the playoffs, Steve Baker stood on his head and did his best Eddie Giacoman impression and we pulled off the upsets.

You are too young to remember but check it out on YouTube, during the Ranger King series, there was a bench clearing brawl that took well over 10 minutes to finally subside. And like you mentioned guys like Hospodar and Beck were major participants in the brawl. Matter of fact if you watch it Beck is the one who pretty much started it by cheapshot punching Rick Chartraw before Chartraw was even ready and knocked him to his ass.

But back in the day, tho it wasn't common place, you never knew when a bench clearing brawl would break out. You make a good point about Duguay too. For a pretty boy, Duguay could definitely handle himself when he got into it.

I've seen that brawl quite a few times. MSG The Vault used to show it as well in like 2010, 2011 era. In this PC era there is no way that would be aired on tv ever again.

My ex g/f who I dated back in the early part of last decade, I think she got sick of me watching it lolol. Bonus to the organist playing Hava Nagila.

My earliest memories of watching the Rangers are from the late 80s when they started to turn the tide after Esposito was GM. Before then I was familiar with hockey and the rivalry of the Rangers/Islanders growing up on LI, but didn't actively watch. My Uncle got me into hockey a little after baseball and it quickly became my #1 sport.

An Avs fan posted this, maybe we can let it go?
He’s fine defensively, but benefits a lot from playing with Makar. When Makar left him in his second injury stint, Graves really struggled.

Most people on the Avs board view him as a bottom pair defender moving forward.

I’m still happy to have him though, there are a lot worse NHL defenceman out there.

Graves' numbers are really nothing to write home about w/o Makar. Like, they're good, but it's a really high GF%/HDGF% compared to xGF% and an absurdly high PDO.

Like...he's not special. He's okay, but he's not special.

Get over it. Would he be better than the LHD we have? Yes. Would he be that much of a difference maker on the NYR roster? No.

Granted, a Graves-Fox pairing is probably going to be about as good as a Graves-Makar pairing, sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... :dunno:

Talk of the NHL resuming late summer.

Some GMs want to finish the reg season out so all teams can reconnect with fans and get the gate for all 82 games.
Others more inclined to go straight to playoffs and possibly expand the tournament to 20, 22, or 24 teams.

The teams that are completely out of it playing a meaningless 12 games is a hard sell. If they do play at all. I think if they do resume we may see a sort of mini play-in tournament/expanded playoff format and with it some sort of weighted revenue sharing plan including the regular 16-team playoff format to get all of the teams a share of the playoff money. Each team would recoup a decent portion of the dozen or so games or less that was lost.

Obviously still a long way to go. If things peak in the next 2-3 weeks and testing is more widespread and we can get some real data in we may find that a majority of the country has herd immunity. That would go a long way to restarting everything including professional sports. We need widespread, portable, fast & reliable testing. That is the most important thing right now.

it’s just people chatting among themselves. The gate? There won’t be a gate. Based on what Dr Fauci said, a second wave is inevitable and likely in autumn. Keep an eye on the Southern Hemisphere (earth) as their summer starts turning to winter. Ours could dissipate but will return according to Fauci. Scary times.

i don’t know when major sporting events will return. Bottom line; we need a vaccine.

I honestly don't know if the NHL can even resume at all in 2020. How late into the summer can you expect to play and still have good ice? And then when would the 2020-2021 season start? This talk of a possible second wave of covid-19 in the fall/winter is scary. You don't want to think you have this thing in the rearview just to load up arenas full of fans in October and start another round of the virus spreading.

I don't know why, but this made me laugh so hard.

Finland, I assume? Czech Republic here, first confirmed case 6 days ago. 21 as of now. Possibly hundreds of others that have not been picked up on though... I mean, it is no end of the world, as some media would have you believe, but the public health risk is real. And this probably includes Finland too, unless you close your borders entirely.

Sorry I'm horrible keeping up with responses. Grenada in the Caribbean - we now have 7 cases so it finally happened. If they had closed the borders 2 days earlier we'd have zero cases still.

Haven't watched it yet but I'm sure some of you will be interested in this... Hour long documentary about the 1993 Maine Black Bears championship season, titled 'Out Of The Woods':

(features Paul Kariya and his remarkable season)

So the season hypothetically starts again in early May. What are the chances y'all think that the top 3 teams in each division are given automatic playoff spots and teams like ours who get to play in a one game "win and you advance" in each conference and the final two teams standing get the final two WC spots...thoughts?
