The team signing the player should have to give up a pick much like the way offersheeting works. Except the pick should be based on NHL games played in the next season.

That's interesting. I wouldn't be against some kind of compensation to the team losing said player.

At least give the team that lost out some kind of compensation.

Maybe a pick one round below where the player was drafted?

That's all I can imagine honestly, cause it's not as though the teams losing the players in these situations invested any time or money into developing them when they're off playing in a college program.

I like the idea of treating the player like an RFA. If your drafting team is low-balling you, go out and sign an offer sheet with another team.

In a Kevin Hayes situation, Hayes would be free to sign a contract with the Rangers but the Hawks could match. And if Hayes is hell-bent on not playing in Chicago, he can demand a trade and the Hawks could trade him for his true worth.

The Reilly situation with Columbus sucks. The kids dad is a minority owner of the Wild, picked in the 4th round and now Columbus is going to lose him for absolutely nothing and Minnesota gets an NHL-ready defenseman who will play for them next year. It's BS. Columbus gets screwed out of a valuable asset for no reason whatsoever.

I don't feel sorry for the teams when they lose out. They have up to 4 years to sign the player. If they don't, they don't. No one complains how unfair it is when a player isn't offered a contract by a team.

And some people here go to ridiculous length's to defend any and everything this team and it's management group does.

I remember posters throwing out a theory that the Hawks didn't extend Kayes an offer.

This is what I don't get. Why do NCAA players get treated differently than say a guy who was drafted but didn't sign with a club because they kept playing in Europe?

Three point game in the McDavid Bowl Sabres/Leafs matchup.

Pull your goalie in OT and lose the loser point if you fail to win!

Sean Monahan is like a bargain-bin version of Toews. I like him.

Calgary's fun. I hope they either hang onto a playoff spot or pull of a huge win in the lottery.

I think they'll make it. I think they get crushed by whoever they play in the 1st round, but I think they make it.

Hawks wanted to sign Hayes. They made him an offer. They got #54 Overall for him. They invested a pick in him that was about 30 spots higher. This compensation is not fair. Rangers get him for nothing. It should be the Rangers 2nd what we got.

Hayes got what he wanted.
Rangers too without giving up anything.
Hawks got less than fair value for him. Same with Ducks and Schultz back then.

If a Player doesn't get a contract offered, he becomes a Free Agent and is free to sign with any Team he wants. That's not compareable. It just isn't the same.

Hawks made their bed and were forced to lay it in. I see nothing unfair about it.

You know nothing about the Hayes situation. When should we have signed him, while he was in a hospital bed while doctors discussed having to amputate his leg?

You leave kids in school for 2 years minimum in college. Then if a kid is dominating, maybe. But Hayes wasn't he was being "Captain stairwell". Google it. Then the next year Kevin had serious health issues and was 10 hours away from amputation.

The Hawks didn't "make their bed". A series of crazy circumstances happened.
