Isn't that why these guys have agents? To talk some effin' sense into them before they make...

Cap space nonwithstanding, would you have given Miller the same contract?

You could do worse, but with Fox as one of the best PPQBs in the world Miller wouldn’t be putting up the numbers to “justify” the price to many. But compared to guys who make more than him like Nurse, Jones, or our own Trouba, yeah it would have been wise to lock him up.

I'm a little drunk, so ignore me if I'm out of line, but shouldn't Motte be trying to get paid as much as he can? Isn't that how the entire world works?

Or is Larry volunteering his time and not squeezing every penny out of his ever-increasingly irrelevant opinion?

This is true and it goes farther than just knowing your worth, and that's why these million dollar athletes hire help to tell them just exactly what they're worth when you're trying to go for a few mil and end up getting less than the price of an ELC contract some 18 year old is making.

But a mistake wasn't really made. He got league minimum. League minimum was what everyone had available. I don't see where he left money on the table. It's just a terrible market for players at the moment.

Motte was good here (more so in his first tenure) but it's time to start integrating Cullye/Edstrom/Othmann into the lineup already. Between them and signing Bonino/Pitlick/Wheeler, no room for him.

We don't really know if he made a mistake or not. If he had been willing to sign for 1 mil on July 1st, would he have gotten that contract? While we can't know, it's hard to imagine he couldn't have gotten more than 800k considering some of the other players who got more.

Kevin Stenlund, for example, got 1 x 1 from Florida after not being QOed by Winnipeg. Sam Steel didn't get a QO from Minnesota, then signed 1 x 850k with Dallas. NJ gave McLeod 1.4 mil and San Jose gave Burroughs 3 x 1.1 mil. Burroughs has 11 points in 95 career games.

1) Crosby
2) Hughes
3) Zibanejad
4) Aho
5) Barzal
6) Fantilli
7) D. Strome
8) Frost

They probably should've went with Kuznetsov and Couturier over Strome and Frost, would've been more interesting.

Even if Hughes outscores him by a c*** hair, think I'd still go with Crosby at #1 right now for his overall game. That could change quickly though. Zibanejad on his game, I think you could make a fair argument for #2 for the same reasons. Kills penalties, PP, competent on FOs, he does everything. Aho is a similar mold. Think I'd still have to put Hughes ahead of them though. I'm half tempted to put Fantilli above the rest of them. Bedard/Fantilli could shape up to be like McDavid/Eichel. When Eichel first got to Buffalo there wasn't a ton of help at wing. I'd fully expect Fantilli to get a chance to play with guys like Gaudreau, Laine and K. Johnson. He could be a star right out of the gate.

Honestly if we ever get a chance to see 19-20 Zibanejad again he could be the #1 guy on that list bringing everything that he does. That was a guy that year that was 7th in the entire league in terms of points per game, 5th for centers. A whopping 108 point pace. Him and Panarin were MACHINES that season. As much of bozo Quinn was, he did try to get these guys to play a more direct N/S game. And the numbers speak for themselves.. its no coincidence that season both Zibanejad and Panarin were on pace for the most shots they've ever had in their career. For reference, Panarin was on pace for ~250 shots. Zibanejad was on pace for ~300 shots. An average season they don't come close to those totals. They need to get back to that. Those both would've been career highs. Pastrnak had over 400 shots this year. A lot of the best players in the league hover near that 300 number or more. Both Panarin and Zibanejad have outstanding shots. They need to get back to those shot totals. They are much much better players when they're playing more direct. As much as I've been disappointed in Panarin, I'm looking forward to seeing if Laviolette can push the right buttons for him and the rest of them. A number of these guys have much much more to give

I mean.........Babcock being a mega prick is well documented so this is exceptionally not surprising if true.
