People act like Karlsson didn't just win the Norris.

It's just cool to make fun of him at this point, but the Sharks scored 0.84 more goals per 60 with him on versus him off, and only gave up 0.12 more goals.

He's a huge net positive. Always has been.

It's not that hot of a take. If Karlsson and Letang can fight off age one more year, their defense and center depth are both among the best in the league.

I can see a lot going wrong for the Pens but the talent is there.
Plus with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson on the PP they'll be at like 50% for the year.

Lafreniere for...? (honestly asking. Montreal has some picks; still in a rebuild. Josh Anderson wouldn't fit in the NYR cap without retention. Caufield/Suzuki unavailable; Slavosky(sp?) hurt last year and was top pick in last year's draft.)
Idk LMAO Montreal doesn't have a single attainable asset I'm interested in.

It is an extremely hot take. Scorching hot dramatic take. They couldn’t play defense last year and they won’t be playing defense this year. Their goaltending is the definition of suspect. They have no help coming from their farm system anywhere. Their most important players are yet another year older. I cannot wait to face them next year.

This is coming from someone who knows you have been around these boards along time and thus knows how the pendulum of takes swings for you.

You're talking about the Pens like they won 20 games last year. They missed the playoffs by one point.

You don't think adding the Norris winner to a bubble team puts them in the mix?

If you want to say their organizational outlook sucks in a few years when everyone retires, that's different, but that's not what we're talking about.

Maybe it does put them in the “mix” but their organizational outlook DOES suck and it sucks right now. It sucked last year. There are multiple reasons why they missed the playoffs by 1 point and why they were in a position where it came down to the last day of the season. They haven’t addressed their prominent holes. They still exist. They are getting older and slower in their key guys. Talent and the hands may be there but its simply not enough. EK will help them score more points offensively, but they will be even worse defensively than they already are. Please don’t let that Norris trophy fool you. You are the one claiming they will be better than the Rangers. Its straight up laughable

Yes I'm claiming that they might be better than the Rangers.

The Rangers are like, the 13th best team in the NHL, dude.

In a way I'm relieved that the Pens ended up with Karlsson and not Carolina. He actually is a tremendous fit with Carolina that would have maybe gotten them over the hump. He'd make them Metro favorites without a doubt and maybe East favorites.

He'll go to Pittsburgh and get them to a 2nd or 3rd place Metro finish but Jersey or the Canes will still make quick work of them in the first round.

Either way, there's way more than a nonzero chance that the Rangers may not make the playoffs next year. I had them at 70/30 making vs not before today. Now more like 55/45 if you ask me right now.

It's the same thing that causes all the arguing.

I'm not saying everyone has to be miserable or that the Rangers can't be a good team.

My only thing is, this weird ass f***ing entitlement the last two summers that the Rangers are in the NHL's cream of the crop is a) wrong and b) sets a really toxic expectation around the team.

The Rangers are owed a playoff spot. It's in the Bible and the Constitution.

They don't. They just barely took any on.

Why can't we trade absolutely nobody and get good players in return?

Meh. We'd see bitching around here like crazy taking on Karlsson, ages 33-37, at 10M/year. Fox is better, younger, and costs less.

I mean, I give Pittsburgh credit as they're clearly seeing the last kicks at the can for Crosby, Malkin and Letang but let's not fool ourselves into vaulting the Penguins into being a favorite or anything.

I really don't get this trade.

I could see Karlsson having limited value if somebody was taking on that massive deal, but this was pretty much break even for Pitt.

The Sharks didn't clear that much salary (not until 2025), don't really need to, and didn't get that much back.

The next time you just feel like doing somebody a favor, call Drury. We have Jacob Trouba to give you for no reason if that's what you're into.

I wouldn't be, but you're right, everyone else would be.

People hate Erik Karlsson because it's a meme to hate Erik Karlsson. That's a factor above and beyond our usual discourse.

Trouba ain't waiving any time soon unless Laviolette publicly shits on him. His wife is still in the last year of her residency I think. If he moves its next summer.

If the Rangers miss the postseason, I expect three of Trouba, Kreider, Panarin, Shesterkin, Kakko, and Lafreniere are dealt next summer.

The Rangers are one Adam Fox injury from having a 25% chance at the playoffs. They are *very* precariously constructed.

This is something I've considered.

This team is a stretch of 20 or 30 games without Fox, Zibanejad, or Shesterkin away from picking in the top 10 in next year's draft. This organization has really been fortunate when it comes to injuries the last 3 or 4 years.

top 10? they're instant lotto contenders if Fox is out for anything more than a few weeks.

their defense would be no joke a bottom 5 unit in the league. maybe bottom 3 depending on how much ass Trouba sucks.
