The Capitals are hoping Wilson is one of those power forwards like Keith Tkachuk/Mike Knuble/Eric Cole who is still useful and doesn't join "The 31 Club" (for those who don't get the joke, it's "The 27 Club" for NHL power forwards). Even so it's a modest raise and in the summer of 2025 they basically will be having a reset.

Them and the Penguins will both be in rebuild mode as soon as next spring and as late as summer 2025.
The Capitals will be trying to trade that contract within 2-3 years.

Pittsburgh gets Karlsson and barely gives anything of value up and is able to unload two of their worst players in the process. I know Grier wanted to get something done for SJ but he ends up with what will be a bottom half first and an three older players in Granlund, Hoffman and Rutta. Couldn’t have squeezed in a prospect?

karlsson is 33 making mega bucks at a time when no good teams have any cap space. he had very little options in this trade.
For an offer like this? I am waiting. It’s the First week of August.

NHL teams go out of their way to help the Penguins just like NBA teams go out of their way to help the Lakers

The Meier deal was terrible too. That was the Kovalchuk trade all over again

Pittsburgh trying to get one or two more runs before Crosby and Malkin hang them up. Both are on the wrong side of 35 Yo when the season starts.

They have won their cups with that core, so it’s all just extra gravy for them now. I think Dubas did well in that trade. Don’t expect much from an aging group but think they can squeeze into the playoffs. Their goaltending is still left to be desired.

Waiting for what? There were basically 3 teams interested, of which 2 already said no thanks. Karlssons value isn't getting any higher than this, it's only going down because I doubt he will repeat a Norris season and even should such a miracle happen he's still getting older.

For me, Grier did good by not retaining a ton and getting rid of that albatross of a contract. Maybe they could actually try to rebuild now. Probably sucks to be Hertl, but nobody forced him to re-sign there and everyone was questioning it because it was obvious that team is going nowhere but down for years to come.

Waiting for a better deal. He’s got four years left on his contact. What if someone gets injured in training camp and goes on LTIR? What if teams are more hungry at the trade deadline? A lot can happen and Karlsson is under contract. All this trade did was bail out the Penguins from bad players with bad contacts to the great player with a bad contract

I thought Grier did rather good here. I hope Karlsson stays healthy but I could see him having another Injured 40 point season.

That contract is just not enticing, unless the Sharks would eat much more of it which they obviously weren't interested in doing. They are going to suck, and don't want to retain huge amounts of salary when their revenues are going to tank.

He wasn't moved on the last trade deadline, and there were basically only 3 teams interested now with Penguins being the only one continuing to pursue him. You underestimate how hard that contract is to move, coupled with the fact that the Sharks were not really doing all they could to ease that move.

"What if someone goes to LTIR?"

For 4 f***ing years? Remember, this is not just 1 year of Karlsson. It's 4 years of him at 10mil. That's a big ticket.

Yeah Karlsson was never going to fetch a lot. His age, injuries and horrible contract are insane.

Its actually wild to think how a reigning Norris winner having a historical season was still never going to be all that valuable in the trade market.

well part of it is also doing karlsson a favor. hes a 33 year old superstar who just put up one of the greatest offensive seasons for a dman ever and the sharks managed 60 points. the team sucks and is going full rebuild. meier was a pending UFA. if another team offered more than the devils then grier would have sent him somewhere else. grier cant magically make other teams offer more for their players when he has no leverage.

what if karlsson regresses back to what he was for most of his stay in san jose? an often injured offensive minded dman who never topped 45 points in a season for them. who is trading a 1st for that at 10m+ per year for the next 4 years?

The trade market is warped for a few reasons right now but there's definitely surplus value in older guys with term to be had.

The days of trade a vet for draft pickzzzz that any dummy could do being the hack is over. GM'ing might actually take some creativity now.

The QO was his Meier leverage. And GMs don’t exist to do favors

The Pens got Karlsson ($11.5 - 1.5 retention) for a protected 1st, ditching a washed Petry ($6.25M) and a completely turbo washed Gralund ($4M).

What a slam dunk. LMAO.
