The QO was his Meier leverage. And GMs don’t exist to do favors
how was the QO his leverage? if anything it made him lose leverage because meier was more difficult to resign for any team trading for him. GMs exist to win. playing hardball and creating a reputation of being difficult to deal with may win you a battle a couple of times but you are making it more difficult for yourself to win in the long run.

The Pens got Karlsson ($11.5 - 1.5 retention) for a protected 1st, ditching a washed Petry ($6.25M) and a completely turbo washed Gralund ($4M).

What a slam dunk. LMAO.
they did give up a 2nd too. they have retained on petry.

Didn’t he have a NTC? Maybe he only picked a few teams
There were not that many teams interested in the first place. Supposedly Karlsson was ok on all of 'em (Pens, Carolina, Seattle, Toronto before Dubas got canned), because that's better than the Sharks lol.

Breaking news: The Pittsburgh Penguins are old and not scary at all.
In a couple years they are going to be awful as their Cup "window" will come to an end. They have no picks/prospects and it's going to be ugly.

As for this year, they'll be entertaining if nothing else; play in a bunch of 5-4/6-5 games. Their defence stinks and their no. 1 goalie, Jarry, is always hurt. They need a backup who could have to play about 40 games.

Halak is still out there, and probably would sign cheap now that he found out he's not getting a raise after us. They have Nedeljkovic, so adding Halak for cheap wouldn't be a bad idea I think.

What the Sharks have done under Grier is the opposite of hardball. They don’t need the cap space they could have qualified him so they didn’t have to deal him for a garbage offer at the deadline. QO buys them more time

so the sharks dont trade meier and instead look to move him this summer or at the trade deadline next year? sharks are way over the cap on opening day with a 10m meier on the roster. what if meier gets injured this year in the last season before UFA? who is trading for an injured pending free agent? idk why u seem to think trading a player that makes 10m+ a year for prime assets is so easy to do.

Karlsson is an OFD who cheats for offense, can’t defend and struggles moving the puck under any kind of pressure

His puck retrievals last year were hilarious to watch, made Trouba look like Fox.

They don't. They just barely took any on.

Why can't we trade absolutely nobody and get good players in return?

Penguins offloaded Petry (serviceable but about 10,000 tiers below Karlsson right now) and Granlund (no longer an NHL player, IMO - he’s too washed for anyone’s top six and doesn’t fit in a bottom six at all) for Karlsson at the exact same cap hit as those two.

We all dislike the Pens but I’ve outgrown my real hatred for them and mostly respect Sid and Letang. I like Karlsson. Malkin and Guentzel are kind weasels but, oh well. I can put my dislike of the Pens aside enough to acknowledge that - as we undeniably wind down to the end of some great careers, particularly Crosby and Karlsson, but also Geno and Letang - I think it’s entertaining to put arguably the best forward and best defenseman of their generation together for a few years and see if they can catch lightning in a bottle for one last run.

I mean, imagine Crosby and Karlsson together in 2015? They’re both still great. Not as elite as they were, though Karlsson seems like he really put in the work the past offseason to be the best he can be, and he’s only like 33 now, which isn’t really that old. Honestly, I don’t like Jarry and I don’t like the Pens forward group very much, so I have a hard time seeing them get where they want to be, but:

Pettersson - Karlsson
Graves - Letang

Is a very solid top 4.

Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Rakell, Rust, Reilly Smitch, Acciari, Eller…

If I didn’t really dislike Malkin and Guentzel (and Rust to a lesser extent) and harbor residual ill will towards Sid, even though I’ve grown to simply respect him as a complete player and great talent… it’s an older but fairy solid group.

I’m not saying I like them, but I do like Karlsson and Letang a ton. And at this point I really just have respect for Sid. I wouldn’t write them off. I think the people trying to “haha Pens are old” are just being salty to an extent. Do I expect them to win another Cup with this group? No. Would I be surprised if somehow a team with those guys managed to pull one out before they’re done? Nope. If nothing else, for an 86 birthday, seeing Crosby and Karlsson on the same team, even if it’s a half a decade late, is pretty cool.

There are other moves. I’m not trading my best players for crap offers like Devils and Penguins made because I feel like I have to.

they got multiple firsts, 2nds, and some young players/prospects from trading them when they did. in your scenario you are holding on to high priced players (one of which who will leave as soon as eligible) until their market value tanks further just to prove some point that you are a tough negotiator or something. if these 2 players had higher value then teams would have offered more for them.

Those aren’t good picks though if they are out of the lottery. Bad GMs too fixated on getting FRP shoot themselves in the foot. They also took back bad contracts that they shouldn’t have

they took back a contract that expires next summer and one that expires in 2 summers. they arent going to be good this year and probably not next year either. you seem to be fixated on this value that grier must have rejected to take inferior deals. if karlsson and meier were generating more interest they would have gotten more return. karlsson isnt getting more valuable the older he gets and further removed from a historic season he gets. meier as a RFA with an outrageous qualifying offer that would have gotten him to UFA next summer. san jose didnt have time to just wait for better deals for these players. i dont know what FRP stands for.

Montreal, once they put Carey Price on LTIR, will have about $14-15M in cap space. Wondering if they would have interest in Panarin and Goodrow... LOL (just kidding!)

Seriously I'm not sure there is a trade fit with Montreal.
