Has any team had a better improvement in coaching than the isles have going from Weight to Trotz? Talk about an upgrade.

Or at GM from Snow to Lou.

No defenseman?

I mean I'm excluding Lidstrom for example, because he was generational waaay before I got to hockey. Like Jagr too, I saw him play for the Rangers, but I didn't witness him break into the league and dominate shit right away.

I don't see any generational D in the league whatsoever. Basically Coffey, Orr, (maybe even Leetch) ... these caliber D-man don't exist anymore.
Nobody is gonna pick EK over any of the 4 I mentioned. Or a goalies for that matter.

It’s going to be fun to watch Cooper glue Coburn and Callahan to Columbus’ top line and keep his job when they get eliminated by the 8th seed

And where do you lump in a Messier? And, Lindros called to say hello.

Lindros I can see - shortened career, injuries, etc..

Messier?
Jagr?

I mean, if you're 2nd and 3rd leading scorers of all time (one of 'em taking 3 years off to play elsewhere) aren't generational then I'm not sure what generational means.

Lidstrom won 7 Norris'. What more does that guy have to do?

EK is another guy I think might be considered close to generational if
Not for the recent injuries. He controlled
games like few other D’s I’ve seen recently

I think if we're coming up with half-a-dozen or more "generational talents" at any given point in time, we're probably getting a little too broad with the turn.

I'm seeing a lot of elite names, and certainly plenty of hall of famers.

But mixed in their I'm seeing guys who were excellent and durable, or guys who thrived in transition eras, or are consistently among the best of the best, but never quite "the guy."

And therein becomes the challenge of defining generational --- agreeing on the cutoff between elite and guys who defined a generation.

Obviously generations overlap, but when we start naming 6-12 guys at a time, that feels more like an all-star team than generational.

Last 40 years:

Gretz, Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin, (probably McDavid if he stays on the ice. Lindros likely would have been if he stayed healthy)

Bourque, Lidstrom
