No way... too many legends regarded as the best skaters. Orr and Bure are clearly above McDavid IMO.

Orr was ahead of his time but he wouldn't be anything special today.

Bure was fantastic as well and its close between him and McDavid. In terms of speed and agility with the puck, they're #'s 1 and 2 for me.

Mackinnon is a cut behind, but not too far off.

Give Orr the technology that McDavid has and he'll be the best hands down. A lot of people didnt watch orr play. I've had the privilege to talk to some older Bruins fans who got to watch him live and they said that there will never be a better skater than Orr. And if it wasnt for his bad knees we would of solidify his spot as the best D ever.

That's blasphemy in the hockey world. You might even be banned from Canada for life for that statement.

This is true!! Orr was the BEST player that EVER played this game. Hands down.

Up until last year, the Caps fell into that category too. Vancouver during AV. Ray Bourque's Bruins. Those three stick out in my mind.

Flyers too. The Lindros/Leclair Years. Then again with making the finals in 2010 with Richards/Carter/Giroux team and it blowing up the next year.

Offensively, yes. Orr was great all around.

Some could argue that Orr played during a time where fitness and skill was far and few to the likeness of a glorified beer league compared to the time frame Gretzky played in. Both players were far better then the competition they played against but Wayne is the great one bar none.

Ho Sang can't crack an Islanders lineup that's going to feature: Komarov, Filp, Martin, Cizikas, and Clutterbuck? I find that very hard to believe but I'm excited that they're thinking this way.

Don't forget Islanders Legend Ross Johnston

Wait, he's still in their NHL camp?

This is amazing. If he is going to be a menace, it's pretty much what the Flyers stand for.

On the one hand, I just don't think Ho Sang is that good and will amount to anything more than a marginal NHLer.

On the other hand, Ross Johnston?

The thing with Gretzky is how far ahead of everyone else he finished.

There are a number of guys you might look at and say could've/should've/would've, but at the end of the day they weren't even close.

Additionally, there are a lot of guys whose skills you would look and think they should've revolutionized the game. They were bigger, or stronger, or faster than Gretzky. But they also didn't come close.

I mean the scoring difference between Gretzky and Jagr is a HOF career worth of points. That's insane.

Now, I never had the chance to see Bobby Orr play live in my lifetime, but he's another one who was so far ahead of the curve that it almost seems comical. Then you watch videos of him and it looks like he's toying with kids.

When I think of the the best of the best, there are three names that pop into my mind --- Gretzky, Orr and Lemieux. I had the opportunity to witness two of the three in my lifetime. I've not seen anyone else like them.

Edge, I agree with you as those three are the best in my mind also. I'm a little older than you at 63 and did see Orr in his prime especially killing my rangers back then. Just a totally dominating skater and offensive player scoring over 100 points and 30 plus goals many times but what separated orr in my mind as the best of the 3 is he was also a dominating defensive player which the other 2 weren't winning 8 straight norris trophy's in a career cut short by some debilitating knee injuries.

The article on Kyle Okposo and what he went through after his concussion is a very good read. Highly recommend it on the Athletic

Sounds like he should not be playing hockey ever again...that's all kinds of messed up
