Clowe shot 3% last year (unsustainable)
Jagr had 0 goals on 58 shots (also unsustainable)

It's not like Clarkson and Kovalchuk didn't get older either.

In Kovalchuk's NJ career he has averaged 32.8 goals per 82 games.

Looking up Ryder's stats of the past three years, his goal scoring numbers are comparable to IK.

Pretty sure Jagr and Clowe will outproduce Clarkson

Having a competent goalie who can actually stop a puck will be a nice bonus

If you want to only look at goals, then sure Ryder's .33 GPG is pretty close to Kovalchuk's .41 GPG the past 3 seasons. But assists change the dynamic a lot, and Kovalchuk's 174 pts in 195 games is a huge gap from Ryder's 138 pts in 207 games.

I dunno. You lose Parise and go from SCF to missing the playoffs. Then your non-playoff roster loses Kovalchuk and Clarkson, too. Are Clowe, Jagr, and Ryder supposed to replace those three and get them back to playoff contention? Or do you just feel they're better than last season?

I'm asking this way because your initial assertion compared two seasons of Kovalchuk and Clarkson against Clowe, Jagr, and Ryder. But if you're using a two season spread, which is fine because it compares a playoff roster vs a non-playoff roster, then perhaps the loss of Parise should be accounted for in said comparison. And in that respect this team looks dramatically worse.

So when we traded for Clowe, Devils fans were making fun of us and had memes about Fatty having more goals than him.

Now that he's a Devil, he's supposed to score 20 goals and play 65+ games.

I actually think Clowe will come out of the gate strong. He is a warrior and was hampered by injuries all last season. Sharks fans said he started to look better when he was pretty much forced to sit out and let his shoulder heal. He could easily score 50-60 pts playing top 6 minutes.

Giving someone at his age (30+) and that plays his type of punishing style that long of a contract is asinine, though. Now factor in potential concussion issues and you'd think Lou Lams was on acid when offering that contract. Still, let's not pretend like he's made of glass here. He played in 70+ games the previous 4 seasons before the lockout and even played in 40/48 games last season. Besides his torn ACL in 07-08, the guy generally plays 85% of each season, which is almost miraculous considering his style of play.

The concussions are worrisome because now it will be much easier for him to sustain future concussions. I wonder if it will have an effect on the type of game he plays. Will he continue to fight? I'd imagine doctors will advise him not to. Also if he must change his style and start avoiding the corners, he will become extremely less effective of a player.

Clowe's contract is terrible but I see no reason why he can't be worth it the first 2, maybe 3 years.

He is gonna be a huge pain to play against. There are going to be a lot of funny posts in the GDTs.

I think the idea that Clowe will ever be truly healthy is a complete misnomer. There's a real Lindros dilemma with him. For him to be effective, he needs to be involved and play physical. But now he's susceptible to injuries — and the two concussions (coming so close together) doesn't help.

Devils fans think Ryder will replace Kovalchuk? Really? Thats a stretch if I ever heard one.

Lou is patching the ship with aging vets. It's only a matter of time before it sinks. I applaud Lou for doing the best he could and I don't necessarily disagree with what he's done this summer. But to think they're better than last year is downright foolish. If there's one thing Rangers fans know, it's that replacing a home grown player like Clarkson with an aging, injury prone vet, isn't simply replacing one mans points with another's. They will be in for a rude awakening if that's their mindset.

Devlis fans also said that they didn't need Parise because Zajac was better. They are the most delusional fans in the league.

Clarkson was nearly untouchable after his hot start last year. I wonder how a Clowe for Clarkson trade proposal would have been taken by Devils fans at that point...

 jesus…maybe we need to play 1 friggin game next year before people start denouncing or applauding lou lam’s moves. just as an aside, people that say devils fans are blind to negativity- we’re fans. some of us are more realistic than others, but we all want to believe we could win it all every year. same as you. as rival fans, its your place to say how much we suck and vice versa, but hammering the ‘homerism’ point home over and over isn’t really advancing your cause or exalting rangers fans.

personally, im pretty excited for JJ. i dont see many guys his age training and preparing as hard as he does, so i cant wait to see what he has left in the tank (i think him playing 82 games would be foolish, but so would marty starting 60)

Whether or not Adam Larsson takes a step above "pedestrian" will affect a pretty decent chunk of their season IMO.

I really do think the plan for the devils is to sign all of these Vets. trade them at the dead line to acquire draft picks, and possibly try to trade up in the draft to get a first rounder or keep the multiple seconds and thirds to replace the weak prospect pool the devils have.

Really isn't that bad of an idea.

I guess they should hope the team is out of contention before the deadline. A lot easier to clean house that way.

Who would they offload besides Jagr? Clowe is untradeable. Ryder is not really a rental since he has an extra year, and with cap uncertainty teams would be reluctant to trade for future salary. Zubrus and Elias aren't going anywhere.

Yea, because Ranger fans are never guilty of inflating the worth of an acquisition.

Am I the only Ranger fan who thinks the Devils roster could be competitive? At least in the near term?

I mean, most people here are ready to write their obituary

I think Ryder would have value, especially with the cap going back up.

You might be the only Rangers fan who looks at the Devils roster and is even mildly impressed.

But I'm never surprised when the Devils are competitive.
