Who would they offload besides Jagr? Clowe is untradeable. Ryder is not really a rental since he has an extra year, and with cap uncertainty teams would be reluctant to trade for future salary. Zubrus and Elias aren't going anywhere.

If you're referring to the cap potentially going down from where it is, that's not possible.

I think they could be competitive, but that doesn't mean making the playoffs. How much gas does Jagr have left? Can Clowe play a full season, and if so, will he even be decent? Is Ryder gonna score 30+ goals? When does Elias start declining? How will they do against fast teams? And even if they're in a playoff position by the trade deadline, would be even be smart to keep players and go for the playoffs, or would they be sellers anyway?

If we signed Clowe to that contract, they'd be havin' a good chuckle about it all summer.

You might be the only Rangers fan who looks at the Devils roster and is even mildly impressed.

But I'm never surprised when the Devils are competitive.

I said "could be competitive," - not sure how that constitutes being impressed. By your last sentence, it sure seems like you're hedging your bets like me.

Given the Devil's history, I think its absurd to be talking about how they're going to sell off players at the deadline.

How about the Devil's recent history? 2 misses in 3 tries. To me, their recent history says a hell of a lot more than it does about whatever the Devils did 10 years ago.

John MacLean was a disaster of a coach, and Im not so sure a 48 game season is a really solid indicator of anything. In between, they managed to advance further than the Rangers have over the past 20 years.

Ill be happy to dance on the Devils' grave, but I need to see it first.

Yea, because Ranger fans are never guilty of inflating the worth of an acquisition.

Am I the only Ranger fan who thinks the Devils roster could be competitive? At least in the near term?

I mean, most people here are ready to write their obituary

Am I the only person that thinks that Rangers fans are absolute pessimists? I mean sure if a Devils fan comes in and starts hating on our players I get annoyed, but in personal discussions between co-Rangers fans, I'd say that most of us are essentially non-believers.

Hence the reason a cup win will feel so good if it ever happens again.

The oilers and flames made cup runs too, means nothing. MacLean got fired, they still missed. They missed in 11 and 13, what do these two have in common? No Parise. Now no Kovalchuk. When Kovalchuk was out of the lineup they lost 10 in row. Older and Slower. They were old and slow before Kovalchuk left.

Its been my experience that some of the smartest and most knowledgeable posters on this board are of the pessimistic variety? Why? Because the Rangers have traditionally not given much to be optimistic about over the last 20 years.

I think if there was just a shred of success, historically, with this franchise you'd see a bit more optimism But we're already 20 years down line from the last Cup and would have to reach as far back as the start of WW2 for the 2nd to last Cup. That a whole lot of frustration and disappointment and heartache. And as we all know...you cant put Ben Gay on a heartache. ;)

Devils fans seem more optimistic. 53 of 93 so far think their team is better off without Kovalchuk than with Kovalchuk.

I just have to keep going back to last year when they said they didn't need Parise. Delusional.

Wow lol. Delusional.

As long as Zajac is still better than Parise.

You guys give the Devils board far too much flak. Like any board. they have a set of good posters, and a lot of homers/ young fans.

If Nash were to retire tomorrow, there would be a contingency here that would argue that it would actually be a good thing for a myriad of reasons.

I mean for the contract he got, it was a good move to walk away.

Well they missed the playoffs for the second time in 3 years, now they have no Kovalchuk. He was their franchise player. Good move? No. If the Devils had had the financial means they would have signed him to that contract no questions asked.

I wouldn't have. It will come back to bite Minnesota in the butt in a few years as he starts to slow down.

Having Kovalchuk retire now is definitely good in the long run considering cap recapture. He was never gonna finish out this contract in NJ. Kovy knew, Lou knew, even Devils fans knew. Now they get off with a minimal recapture penalty.

Of course in the short term, losing one of the best players in the NHL on a friendly cap hit is devastating. Guys like Jagr and Ryder should be signed to compliment a roster with Kovy and Parise, not replace them.

They will be a mediocre team that might sneak into the playoffs if everyone stays healthy and younger guys step up.

I really do think the plan for the devils is to sign all of these Vets. trade them at the dead line to acquire draft picks, and possibly try to trade up in the draft to get a first rounder or keep the multiple seconds and thirds to replace the weak prospect pool the devils have.

Really isn't that bad of an idea.

its a good idea, sure...but thats not how lou operates. if he signs a player, it is solely to help the devils win a stanley cup. he may offload some if we're out of contention, but i can guarantee thats not the mindset in devilsland.

thats a bit misleading. we're obviously going to miss his production short term, but long term its the right move for the team.

even short term, we will have a more balanced lineup- as the devils have never used Kovy appropriately anyway (imo).

sucks to lose him, but im pretty sure lou has replaced the GF we just lost. we're optimistic, and we certainly wont be bemoaning the loss of a player who took a steaming **** on the organization on his way out. thats a sports fan for ya

Why don't Devils fans realize that "Goals In/Goals Out" isn't the exact science they think it is?
