Gardiner is out all season with surgery. Gardiner out for season for Hurricanes, will have hip, back surgeries There was talk on the trade boards of Gardiner for Tarasenko, which I was adamantly against. Thank goodness we dodged that bullet.
if they were sending a good prospect with him, it wouldn't have been the worst thing to get that and Gardiners LTIR space

but without Tarasenko on the roster, we prolly wouldn't need it.. right away anyways.. unless you trade that to a team *ahemTAMPAahem* that needs it

Good article on Schwartz I randomly found tonight. Losing his father suddenly hit him really hard and you could tell he looked off last season. Was probably my favorite forward for the Blues and hope he has lots of success with Seattle.

Unpacking for Fresh Start

I really wish him all the best. I don't think I would have been able to play at all if either of my parents passed.

Sami Niku on waivers. Army should sign him. Literally shocked Jets willing to release him. Somebody will take him. NHL caliber offensive dmen. Interesting Jets didn't trade him. I guess he didn't hold any value. :sarcasm:

Ahhh, yes, Comparing a 24 year old (25 when the season starts) who can't crack the NHL who isn't progressing to a 19 year old who is a year since he was drafted who is still progressing finely.

you can make the case "he never got a fair chance because of injuries" and that he's a low-risk, medium reward guy to pick up, but i think that's about as rosy as you can paint it

he failed to get a spot in winnipeg when they had no defense, got passed by other prospects quickly on the depth chart, and hasn't really had much AHL success outside of his first season. his 54 NHL performances don't suggest he's an untapped talent, but more that he's not NHL caliber yet and maybe isn't cut out for the top tier after all. winnipeg fans seem to universally acknowledge he's not strong enough and has too small of a frame for the physical side of the game. if he was just struggling offensively, that's one thing, but he's gonna have to get better all around before he's NHL worthy and that's probably why the contract is terminating just before the season rather than a trade.

I have to be honest, I don’t understand that Kaprizov contract at all. That’s massive AAV for a guy with 54 NHL games under his belt. He’s highly talented no doubt, but my god what a risk that is.
He was rewarded for his hold-out threat and the KHL risk must have been perceived to be real. This contract is akin to the Toronto contracts. Not sure if Minnesota had much alternative, and hopefully (for them) he'll live up to it. He stands to be negotiating an UFA contract with lots of prime years left after this.

Wild were really backed into a corner. They had waited so long for him, built him up so much in eyes of fans, and then he came and had really good year. Can you imagine how it would have gone over if he had left for KHL? Would have been devastating. Even though it seemed highly unlikely to neutral observer, his side let the threat linger to increase their leverage until they got this done.

kaprizov's new contact spans minnesota's cap nightmare. i understand why he wants to be paid as the team seems likely to struggle on paper. still surprised to see it work for a rookie.
