I don't put anything into his first preseason game. Vets don't care and use it as a warm up to get up to game speed. Only players who care are the young kids and vets on PTO.

Sanford is neither and while he typically plays lethargically, or un engaged, I don't see that as a negative. I also don't see the need to go into another teams thread and repost stuff. Feels a bit like trolling.

You don't see a person that shows up just to get a paycheck that plays with no heart and no determination as a negative?

While a person doing that would certainly be a negative, I don't think that is a fair characterization of Sanford. Big guys play different than little guys, and he has the kind of game with his his long stride and reach that it appears sometimes that he isn't working (conversely a guy like Fabbri looked like he was putting out effort even when he isn't doing anything productive). While he struggled last year and seemed to lose confidence, he was good the prior year and made key contributions on our Cup run. The trade made sense, but Sanford doesn't deserve all the crap flung at him by many of our fans.

He was constantly reaching for the puck because he would stop skating. That's not using your reach.

Sundqvist
Buchnevich
Kostin
Bortuzzo
Parayko

These are players that are 6'3 to 6'6. Not a single one of them plays as lazily as Sanford did. Don't give me the "big guy" crap. For reference Sanford is 6'4.

I don’t see him being lazy in the 1st preseason game as a negative. Basically I think most vets go about 80% in the first few preseason games.

You honestly think an NHL player has "no" heart or determination and just shows up to get a paycheck? Do you think his teammates would say the same about him, because I guarantee they wouldn't. Even making it to the NHL is quite an accomplishment, and likely more difficult than anything most fans will ever achieve. But just because he doesn't play as well as YOU think he should, doesn't mean he's not trying or doesn't care. Comments like this one just make me shake my head.

not sure why you think this is trolling... Sanford was a very polarizing player here, as we all know. thought it was very interesting to see how the new fanbase reacted to him, as some on here thought we were 'too rough on him'.
seems, so far and admittedly SSS, it seems he's stirring the same feelings as we have felt here

In his first preseason game……. Come on. You are acting like regulars go 100% every game in preseason. They don’t.

For the record. I am glad he is gone. Think he is a better NHLer I then Brown, but glad his cap hit is gone and we get a 4th for him.

This isn't about it being his first preseason game, this is how he always plays except for a few weeks per season.

Yes, I do think that and it's been proven many times over that it happens. Armstrong has even mentioned players being here just for a paycheck before and before you ask, he obviously did not drop names. Do you think his teammates want to start shit by telling the public how they feel about him? Go watch his games, watch him. You CANNOT legitimately tell me that he puts forth as much effort as other players on the team. If you don't put as much effort into the game as you possibly can then you clearly do not care. other guys on the team get bitched about not putting effort in when they only coast for a few weeks a year, this guy only puts effort in a few weeks a year and has people defending his lazy ass. That kind of shit just makes me shake my head.

Pretty sure no one is talking about his preseason game and it's entirely about this just being how he ALWAYS plays.

It’s fun to discuss things on other boards. Don’t do it often, but I’ve always had positive experiences.

Except for once on the Sens board (irony?) during their Cup run against the Ducks (I think Ducks).

The Ducks did beat the Sens to win the Cup in 07 if that is the run you're thinking of.

Ok. I’ve stopped paying attention to the off-season as I’m opening up a private practice and I’m doing all of the BS it entails. If you feel like I’m being entitled for asking these questions I totally understand. I just haven’t had the time to keep up. But now I’m starting to get revved up for Blues Hockey. I’m sure if I sifted through pages I could figure this out but could someone kindly give me the Cliffnotes version?

a couple of questions:
What happened with Jack Eichel?

I thought Vladi would be traded? Is this just us wanting a better deal or will he actually be here?

Did the Blackhawks abuse their players?

How does an out of towner get Blues games? Is NHLTV.com not a thing anymore?

ESPN+ is replacing NHLTV. Checkout the Blues’ TV Access thread for more details.

Eichel hurty neck. Wants a surgery the Sabres don't want him to have. They want him to have a different surgery. Various posturing and thumb-biting, but mostly tumbleweeds.

Nobody wants to give value and/or take Tarasenko's salary. Army said these types of requests happen all the time across the entire sport, we just have a situation where the agent went extremely public with it, which is usually not the case. So they're trying to accommodate, but won't hurt the team to do it. It's a waiting game. Prove you're worth the risk to another team.

There are just too many people coming out about the Blackhawks situation for it to be fabricated. Multiple former players are saying some really specific stuff and it makes the organization and some individuals look pretty bad. Not that I'd expect most teams to handle it better. I'd be surprised if this hasn't happened multiple times with multiple other teams.

he has something most people on the Wings don't have. Two very deep playoff runs including a cup. Ontop of that he's a bit older and matured since he was here. I'm sure there are better picks but he's not terrible.

I mean it's not exactly like the Wings are overwhelmed with viable options... Look at their candidates below.

I'm just listing league experience/age as a cursory data point because I don't know the candidates well...

Larkin "C" 25, 433gp for reference.

Fabbri 25, 246gp - 30 playoff games.

Vrana 25, 295gp - 38 playoff games (cup 2018 w/ Washington). On LTIR, to be reassessed in February.
Bertuzzi 26, 206gp - 0 playoff games. Also un-vaccinated, unable to play games in Canada.
Suter 25, 55gp - 0 playoff games
Erne 26, 215gp - 3 playoff games.
Namestnikov 28, 478gp - 41 playoff games.
Gagner 32, 886gp - 11 playoff games.
Rowney 32, 223gp - 23 playoff games (2017 cup w/ Pittsburgh)

Leddy 30, 776gp - 121 playoff games (2013 cup w/ Chicago)
DeKeyser 31, 448gp - 19 playoff games
Staal 34, 948gp - 107 playoff games
Stetcher 27, 330gp - 17 playoff games
Oesterle 29, 252gp - 9 playoff games.

Notice Fabbri is the 4th forward in NHL games played, counting Larkin, their captain? Fabbri is also 9th in games played among their skaters.

I'd suggest that among skaters on the Wings - only Staal, Leddy, Vrana and debatably Namestnikov should get considered for "A" over Fabbri. Staal isn't likely around for long (much like the omitted Gagner). Vrana is going to miss the next 4 months. Namestnikov has bounced around 4 teams between 2019-20 & 2020-21.

So Fabbri and Leddy seem like the obvious choices, assuming that the organization tries to maintain some continuity amongst their "veteran" players, as I expect both will be offered extensions of some sort with the majority of Wings being RFAs/UFAs this summer. It should be noted Vrana is the only one under contract for next season of the "veteran" Detroit players.
