Colton and a first for newhook seems kind of crazy if you don't think the latter will be very good

Ya, this was good asset management by Colorado. Colton isn’t that much of a downgrade from Newhook, and they pick up a late first. Not bad at all.

Devils were reportedly in on Colton. From what I know of the player, sounds like he would have been a nice fit. With that said, I’d rather give up Rango and a mid third round pick for Toffoli than a high second for Colton. From a value standpoint, Toffoli was a better get IMO.

I’m confused… don’t teams need two goalies? Is Lehner a thing still? He can’t still be a thing.

Someone has to explain to me like I’m a child why a cap crunched team would trade a NHL goalie on 2 year/767k deal away.

I don’t think they would. It’s talking about teams wanting him and him wanting a bigger role. Nothing about Vegas actually wanting to move him. I don’t see it.

Newhook isn't even that good. He was way hyped by the one beat writer that said they absolutely must win the cup if they're parting with him for rentals.

That's almost like if Ryan Novozinsky tweeted out something like ''If the Devils are trading Sharangovich for a rental, they absolutely must win the cup''. I would argue Sharangovich has been better than Newhook (though he's 2 or 3 years older I think), but Newhook is also still on an ELC I think and Sharangovich wasn't.

Guy was overrated because of his college career.

I can't see any reason why a contending, cap-crunched team would trade a 1B starter making below league minimum.

I'm sure there are other cap-strapped teams calling about him.

Meanwhile in the Isle…

While it’s true the flat cap is wreaking havoc, that’s the closest acknowledgement you’re going to get as far as lack of discipline around valuation.

Lou’s always played to the very edge of cap, with the plan being to dump, buyout or LTIR a guy if necessary.

He was an excellent team builder* but I didn’t like our cap management under Lou. (Or asset management.)

*Other than the offense from the blue line is getting scarce on the Isles, like it did with us post-Rafalski, so he’s not perfect there either.
