Someone has to play center for them. It’s pretty hilarious to see Zacha penciled in as a potential 1C lol.

Their cap situation is pretty dire, they have 4.5m in bonus overages from last season.
I don't remember if it was Dimitri or his guest but one of them on the PDOCast the other day called Zacha the most mid player in the league and I laughed for a good minute about how accurate that was.

This contract is like me playing EA NHL and have to reach the cap floor on my rebuilding team. But in real life.

It’s also about flipping him at the TDL and then him being a UFA when more teams have money next off-season. It makes sense for him too.

He’ll probably produce by playing a ton.

I don't think any of this is true for Foligno, though. If he wanted to be traded at the deadline, he should've taken a lot of that money in bonuses, which he was eligible for. He'll be 36 and even at half-retention, $2M is a lot of money to add presumably a 4th line winger.

Tomas Tatar getting a couple Selke votes for having the second highest +/- among forwards seems par for the course. Making some progress from when Thomas Vanek showed up on 14 ballots in 2006-07 while being benched late in games when the Sabres were protecting a lead.

I dunno. It's possible they wanted him because of his experience with 1OA draft picks. He's dealt with a LOT of them over his career.

A 6th round pick for Hayes with no retention kind of makes sense…but at 50% retention seems insane

are they actually retaining 50% for 3 years and only getting back a 5th round pick? even if you wanted hayes off the roster it just seems like poor value.

I don't get why they just wouldn't buy out Deangelo either. They would have more cap space this year if they did and only a 1.6m cap hit next season. It would only make sense if the Canes are going to give them something of value but based on reports its an un-signed lower tier prospect.

Idk about their utilization of their retainment spots.

I'm gonna guess that'd be under prohibited activities. I'm reminded of Vladimir Malakhov being spotted at a ski resort (with his family) during the 2000 All Star break. Up to that point, he had been rehabbing a knee injury and Montreal suspended him.

Thankfully we might that that ski trip to thank for the 2000 Cup. Malakhov became hated in Montreal and they didn't wait until the trade deadline to deal him. Otherwise they might have held onto him longer and Philadelphia might have outbid us after they missed out on Ray Bourque.
I forgot about Malakhov and can't blame the Quebecois. I was furious when the Giants McKinney injured himself in an atv accident last year.

Skiing/snowboarding may seem like a relatively innocuous activity to many, but it's pretty dangerous at any level.
