How do we know it wasn’t the opposite? It could very well be that it was Vladi’s agent that was the reasonable one and recommending Vladi take one of the multi year offers he got early, Vladi thinking he could get/deserved more, getting frustrated and firing his agent.
or it could be an agent getting a client by making a bunch of promises of how much better a deal he will get him, and then getting fired by not producing the promised results

Could be true, it just smells like the Klingberg situation last year where his agent advised him to turn down 8x7.25 thinking he could get 8x8. He then ended up in Anaheim on a one year deal after firing his agent.

Tarasenko's case is kind of interesting, since I think it's entirely possible a one year deal like this may have been his best play all along. With the cap set to start raising again, teams will be throwing significantly more money around very soon.

Whether this is a good strategy for him, though, hinges entirely on the level of performance he can bring for this one season. His play the last two has definitely left a lot to be desired, and only he truly knows the state of his health and motivation.

Tarasenko is a weird one to me since to me he seems like the type of player who could use the lack of interest in him as fuel for a resurgence, but also like the type of guy who shuts down if he feels disrespected when he feels he's already proven himself.

These are really good points. I also saw someone on another site make a good point that by taking a 1 year deal he can possibly get a better deal next year plus he's kind of hedging his bet for this year. If Ottawa isn't a contender this year he'll almost certainly get traded to one at the deadline. I bet Tarasenko wants to win another Cup above anything else so this move is less surprising than it seems on the surface.

Maybe he isn't sure about being in Ottawa long term and still wants to be in New York. A Rangers fan in the trade board thread suggested that they will be in a better position cap wise to sign him next year if there is interest from both sides. Or maybe he'll enjoy being in Ottawa and would sign a longer deal next summer.

A couple people have reported that there was an offer from Carolina. Winning another Cup can't be priority #1 if he is going to Ottawa instead of Carolina. Carolina has been a top 3 team in the league for 3 straight years, have won at least 1 playoff round for 5 straight years and are coming off a trip to the Conference Final despite Svech not playing in the playoffs. They also added Orlov to make a good D group even better. I don't think there is any argument that going to Ottawa (with a potential to get moved at the deadline if they suck again) gives him a better chance at the Cup than Carolina.

True. It would be surprising if he chose Ottawa over Carolina if the money was close. Perhaps the rumored deal with Carolina was no longer on the table or Brady sweet talked him into giving the Sens a chance. I saw this tweet posted elsewhere.

I'm more than willing to bet Tarasenko pulled a Klingberg, hence Ottawa. I really hope he does well on the Sens and helps that team get back into the playoffs, followed by a big fat final contract signing right after. His stretch of stardom from 2015 until the cup run was a joy to watch.

Strickland tweeted a correction to the Tarasenko situation the other day, figured I'd share it. We found it hard to believe Tarasenko would choose Ottawa over Carolina if the money was the same and looks like we were right.

I don't like that Wilson deal. I get that they are making all efforts to put the best team around Ovi for the end of his career and I agree with that goal. Trying to get Ovi the all time goals record (with all of them coming in a Caps jersey) is worth putting off the painful rebuild and signing some contracts that will hurt down the line.

Most importantly, I think this is an overpay in total dollars. Given how much talent will be in next year's UFA class, I'm not sure that he'd have gotten a deal matching this. 7 years is the max term other teams could have offered and going through his ag 36 season absolutely means that you are buying dead years with this contract. He's worth more than $6.5M at this stage of his career, but going to age 36 reflects that. I think the total dollars should have been closer to $40M.

But if $45.5M was absolutely the least amount of total dollars it was going to take to get it done, they should have demanded to spread that out over 8 years to bring the AAV down $5.69M. Everyone at that table should have been able to agree that he was extremely unlikely to play an age 37 season in the NHL and that the potential to sign a 1 year deal after a 7 year deal was miniscule. Making him give up that potential to get a $45.5M payday (with a ton of bonuses that make it buyout-proof) should have been a non-issue. When I look at the structure of this deal, I genuinely don't get why this money isn't spread out over 8 years. If you're mortgaging the future to support the present, go all in. save yourself another $800k of cap space per year by adding an 8th year that everyone knows will see the player on LTIR or with another organization as a cap dump.

Always fun when a team hands out a contract everyone knows will be awful. And they just keep doing it.

The Blues and Capitals are basically identical franchises. So many similarities.

There are lots of similarities, but they seem less committed to retooling than us as they want to maximize ovechkin remaining years while we are hoping to just trudge along on edge of playoffs until our kids are ready to help us contend again.

Agree, we are doing a better job retooling and looking to the future.

But still, our histories are so alike. Came into the league around the same time, were “contenders” so many times and always lost early in the playoffs until we both finally broke through in back to back years. After those Cup wins both teams haven’t done anything since, as they got older and the contracts to Oshie and Wilson are similar to ones we’ve given some of our players.

It’s hard to find two teams that are more alike.

Wilson brings a lot of things to the table besides putting up points…but I still think this contract is going to age like milk.

Yeah, I'm thinking he goes full Backes/Lucic by the end of the 2026-27 season (year 3/7, when he turns 33).

Huge locker room presence, leader and clutch player. But, those back 4 years have the potential to be pretty ugly.

That’s fine, but maybe you should both pay attention to other teams more so that you’re actually aware of what’s going on.

Blues are retooling trading our UFAs for draft picks. We have been more than Willing to let aging leaders walk, instead of resigning them (Backes/JS). In the past we have also traded UFAs that we were not going to resign (Shatty/Staz).

We are looking to the future while they are sending their all time great player out in style. they are trying to send ovi off in style.

I understand why the Caps are doing it, but I much prefer the Blues’ path forward to the Caps’. Both teams are not going to be very good in the immediate future, but the Blues have done a great job retooling while the Caps are living in the past.
