Looks like the 'Yotes are staying in Greater PHX:
So much for Houston, dang it. At least for now...
Honestly, there is no reason a team in Phoenix couldn’t thrive if: the arena was accessible to the main population center and the owner didn’t have a reputation as a jackass who alienates his allies.

There are actually enough hockey fans there. This team may become a fun young team to follow in the near future.

Agreed. Just look at the success of the Golden Knights. And I’m not even talking them winning the Cup this year. But that’s Exhibit A on how to start a new team, promote it and grow a fan base from scratch. And the Coyotes are Exhibit A on how not to do it.

The Coyotes make a couple stupid decisions very early on (the Glendale arena being the main one) and it’s tanked them ever since.

Yep, šťastný means both happy and lucky in Czech. One of my little hobbies is learning what Czech names mean and composting them to English names. Of course some names are the same (Vrana = Crow, Krejci = Taylor, Mrazek = Frost) well while others are totally, and often amusingly, different. Stastny as you mentioned, plus David Vyborny = Excellent, Jiri Tlusty = George Fat, Sykora = Titmouse.
Wow. Someone's family name is "George Fat?:

Another odd one Sobotka, meaning little Saturday.

I guess Tolstoy also means "thick" or "fat" in Russian, so Tlusty is the similar Czech version. I guess Sobotka does mean "little Saturday" in a direct translation, but similar to Spanish they use a lot of diminuitive forms. So you have the name "Novak" which basically means "Newman" and "Novacek" which is the diminuitive form of that. Ruzicka is the diminuitive of Rose, Michalek is the diminuitive of Michael, and I guess Sobotka is a diminuitive of Sobota, which means Saturday. I've never met a Czech with the last name Sobota, but I also know there is a town called Sobotka.

I could nerd out for a long time about names and their meanings so I won't go on much longer, but Czech does have some really odd last names. Just a sample: Nejedly = doesn't eat, Nejezchleba = doesn't eat bread, Brzobohaty = soon to be rich, Skocdopole = jumps to the field, Musil - had to, Navratil/Navratilova = one who returned, Kratochvil = little while, and I suppose I should add Necas, which means "bad weather." So Necas playing for the Hurricanes is a perfect fit.

Sobatka means 7th day Sabbath, which much later became know as Saturday in western countries. This is also true in most of the world in hundreds of languages as well as ancient dialects, several of them thousands of years old. Other examples are Subota in Russian. Sabado in Spanish, Savato in Greek, and the first use of this in which all of these words originated is Shabbat שבת in Hebrew. :)

What’s the translation?
Former IndyCar Series driver Zach Claman DeMelo has made serious ausations against Daniel Sprong, saying on Thursday that he was assaulted in a nightclub by the Detroit Red Wings player.

The 25-year-old Montrealer took to social media to tell his story. On Instagram, he said he had been roughed up by Sprong during the Detroit Grand Prix weekend in early June.

"During the Grand Prix weekend, I was assaulted in a nightclub by NHL and Detroit Red Wings player Daniel Sprong. He grabbed me by the neck and pinned me against the wall. We were separated after that fight," wrote the man who competed in 10 IndyCar races in 2017 and 2018.

"When I thought it was over, Daniel came back and punched me in the face while I was helpless. [...] The work the dentist had to do was painful and is still not finished. I also suffered a concussion that I've been dealing with for the last few weeks."

The images shared by DeMelo are quite evocative. His teeth were badly bruised by the blow allegedly thrown by Sprong. He also showed signs of scratches on his neck.

"I just want to draw attention to this situation, as no one has the right to act in this way, especially an athlete of Daniel's calibre," continued DeMelo. We have to hold ourselves to the highest standards of conduct and for him to do this is very disappointing. For legal reasons, I can't say any more at the moment."

Driver has not indicated whether he plans to take legal action against the 26-year-old forward, a former Charlottetown Islanders player. After enjoying the best season of his career - 21 goals and 46 points - with the Seattle Kraken in 2022-2023, Sprong agreed a one-year, $2m contract with the Wings this summer.

As a teenager, the Amsterdam native moved to Quebec to play hockey. He played for the Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior League from 2013 to 2017.

I'm going to assume that the race car driver has enough money to cover his medical bills. So that leaves the only other reason to go public with this is to make Sprong look bad. I'm of the mind set that maybe you should have hit him back and then both of you go and f*** off. If it even was Sprong.

Just because he has enough money doesn’t mean he should be responsible for the costs, assuming his version of the story is true. Good grief.

The Blues and Capitals are basically identical franchises. So many similarities.

Both had Stevens taken from them

I understand why the Caps are doing it, but I much prefer the Blues’ path forward to the Caps’. Both teams are not going to be very good in the immediate future, but the Blues have done a great job retooling while the Caps are living in the past.

I think the Blues are a couple moves away from being serious contenders in 2 years. But let’s be patient and not jump the gun on those moves.

so Jesse Puljijarvi has had double hip replacement surgery. He is still young

Is he finished as a hockey player? I'm sure many players have had hip surgery, but has anyone come back from double replacement surgery?

Stupendous Yappi, I call on you.

Only two active NHL players before have had their hips resurfaced. Defenseman Ed Jovanovski underwent 10 months of rehabilitation after his 2013 procedure, then played in 36 games before getting bought out and subsequently retiring; forward Ryan Kesler never played again after his hip resurfacing in 2019

I can only assume hip resurfacing is the same as replacement? I remember Ray Emery had to have hip replacement and he retired shortly after.

Hip replacement and resurfacing aren’t the same thing. In one, the entire ball and socket are replaced. In the other, they simply try to clean up the surface so it glides better.

I can’t imagine someone with double hip replacement playing in the NHL.

I can't imagine playing professional hockey effectively after such a procedure. Are you sure it was 'replacement'? That is awful for a young guy whose career never really got off the ground.

Resurfacing isn't a big issue, depending on the extent of it. If it's extensive / there's vascular damage around the hip, then it's a big deal because that has to be dealt with as well. That's what I recall for both Jovanovski and Kesler; by the time they did resurfacing, there was so much damage in the hip it really didn't matter and they were done either way.

Arthroscopy is a bigger deal; that's reattaching the labrum. That's what Marchand had, that's what Kane has to do, that's what several other players have done. From personal experience, It's non-weight bearing on that hip for 4 weeks minimum, and if you need both hips done doctors typically require 12 weeks minimum before the other so that the first has time to build strength. It's a 4-6 month timeline for recovery on one, if it goes well, and it's still a few more months after that before you're at full strength. And if you're a goalie, it's rebuilding all that flexibility and strength and it's a bitch to do if you're Joe Patient.

Which is what makes Marchand's recovery so goddamn remarkable; he did both at the same time and was skating inside of 4 months, playing inside of 6 and he looked like he didn't miss a beat.

I think the Matthews deal is largely fine for both sides. The Leafs get a top 5-10 player in the league through his 20's with a shot to re-sign him at the end of it. Matthews didn't sign away the entirety of his prime in a time where the cap has remained stagnant but should be on the rise. Sets himself up for one more huge payday either from the Leafs or in UFA at 30 years old. I'm sure the team would've liked him to be there longer but you're getting what are likely his best years, at a minimum. Frankly, if they don't win a Cup or make a couple runs in the duration of this deal, it'll probably be time to move on for everyone anyway.

For a team that has no interest in winning it's a perfectly fine deal. Matthews is a greedy scumbag IMO. Cares more about his bank account than trying to win.
