How can that be?!

Easily. Charles "Chuckie Sideburns" Lindgren isn't a good goalie. He's a terrible locker room presence. I mean he only was able to total 5 wins for St. Louis in his year here and zero shutouts. The rookie Joel Hofer has more of both in less than a full season. Much less if you compare him to someone like all-time greatest Blues goaltender Brian Elliott, who has best GAA of all time for Blues (6 or more games), most shut outs, highest Quality Start% (6 or more games), highest point capture percentage (6 or more games). Lindgren doesn't even rank in any of those categories.

Not saying Ruff was good at his job this year, but I can't say that I like seeing a team fire their coach 4 days before trade deadline with just 21 games left in the year. Especially when the team goaltending has been unquestionably bottom 5 in the league.

Vanacek, Schmid and Dawes SV% are 53rd, 44th and 57th of the 61 goalies who have played 18+ games. Their Goals Saved Above Expected per 60 are 56th, 48th, and 53rd. no matter how you slice it, they are all among the bottom quarter of the goalies who have played a meaningful number of games this year. Vancek is 27th in both SV% and Goals Saved Above Expected among the 28 goalies who have played 32+ games. He has genuinely been a bottom 2 'starter' in the NHL.

As a whole, the Devils as a team are 30th in 5 on 5 SV%.

There is a very strong argument that the Devils have gotten the worst goaltending in the league this year. The absolute best argument you could make is that a couple teams have gotten worse goaltending.

I understand that the goalie market has been very tough this year and that teams with good goalies have been asking for a haul. And I get not meeting a price that bordered on extortion. But I don't like making the coach pay for that decision. Again, I'm not saying Ruff was good this year. But do we really think that the team would be in a drastically better position with those goalies and the injuries they have sustained?

their playoff chances are fading fast. they got blown out by kings in game they apparently were content to stay outside and not go to hard areas to score. after they lost to ducks previous game. their goaltending has been bad, and their d has been decimated by injuries and free agency, but that team should still be much better than they have been. firing ruff was right choice.

Their playoff chances were fading fast at the all star break when they were 7 points out of a playoff spot (with 3 games in hand). They stumbled into February going 3-6-1 and decided not to do anything when they still had 35 games to claw back into things. Now they are 8 points out of a playoff spot (with 2 games in hand) and their playoff chances are borderline nonexistent.

They are currently further out of the playoffs than we are.

Their playoff chances have faded.

If they weren't going to fix the goaltending and were going to pin things on the coach, they should have done it when there was runway left. If a new coach turns things around to a point where competent goaltending can actually make a difference, you aren't going to learn that until it is too late to go get a goalie. They now have 2 games left before the deadline.

I don't at all understand doing this now. If you aren't going to give a coach NHL goaltending, why pretend like there is a season to salvage when the team is 8 points out of a playoff spot with 21 games left?

because nobody else in east has stepped up. the bubble teams are all struggling, but nobody believes flyers are legit. devils woulda been smarter to can ruff a month ago, but doing it today is better than not doing it. and yes, they still need a goalie. and some vets on d. but this is a start.

Vegas is 2-7-1 in their last 10. Some good teams in the West this yr unlike last yr. Wonder if that will impact their aggressiveness at the deadline.

Every single time Vegas has traded for a Russian Forward from the Blues at the deadline, they have won the cup. Every. Single. Time. They should empty the farm to do it again.

I’m down. I think it’ll be Carolina/Vegas if he’s dealt. He’d be a good replacement for Marchasseault. But they do seem to be playing like ass at the moment.

Counterpoint, if you know you are going to make a change, what do you gain by waiting? The season is lost. Maybe this allows them to negotiate or talk with candidates earlier?

I don’t know who their interim guy is, but maybe they want an evaluation period for someone they may hire as the replacement.

Travis Green. As in, "used to coach the Canucks, was hyped as a really good coach who just needed time to work with the players who needed time to develop and then they'd win a Cup and then riot to celebrate" Travis Green.
