Oof. Oilers are in trouble.

i was expecting this. he has been bad and they need shakeup. nobody is gonna claim him so maybe he can work it out in minors. or maybe guy they recall lifts them. that team is too good to be this bad (they have less wins all season than Canucks have just against them); they do bear some resemblance to our 18/19 Cup winners.

I figured Campbell's poor performances were overstated because of their terrible defensive play this year but I watched their game over the weekend v. Predators. He looked completely lost out there. Terrible save selection, awful edgework, awful positioning and finding himself overcommitting outside of his posts on more than one occasion. It's pretty clear he's struggling mentally because it's not very often you see an NHL goalie drowning out there like that.

This is the right move to help him find his game in the AHL because it's very clear he's completely lost confidence.

Statistically Skinner has been awful but he at least passes the eye test. At the end of the day though, it doesn't really matter who's in between the pipes right now because their D reminds me of our club most of last season. Teams are knifing through them right now and they haven't had any answer for it. Too much chasing and there appears to be a total breakdown in communication. They look lost once the puck comes across the red line. They'll need to figure that out quickly or they'll be buried by Thanksgiving.

It's desperation time in Edmonton.

i think much of their defensive mess is a result of not having confidence in their goalies. if they get a few saves i expect their d will firm up. or woodcroft will get the axe.

Yeah, he has looked genuinely awful every time I've watched them this year. I made a comment in our trade proposals thread about how he's made a case as the league's worst goalie in the last 13 months and I wasn't joking. He wasn't this bad this year, but he has been miles away from NHL-caliber this season.

They are going to be at least 7 points out of a playoff spot at the start of their next game Thursday, which is against San Jose. They should snag 2 points in that one to tread water, but a loss to that Sharks team very well could be a coach killer. Most teams play Thursday, so a loss to the Sharks would very likely see them sitting 9+ points out of the playoffs while delivering a putrid Sharks team their first win of the season. Or even worse, if the Sharks win Tuesday they could tie Edmonton in the standings.

I couldn't fault an owner for running out of patience and firing the coach if they find a way not to beat the Sharks on Thursday.

Beyond Thursday, they play the Kraken, the Isles, and then the Kraken again. You really can't ask for a better 4 game stretch to right the ship, but if they manage to only snag 3 or 4 points in those games then they will already be damn close to throwing a season of McDrai in the garbage.

I’ve watched that a half dozen times and still can’t figure out how the puck went in the net.
It ramps up his stick blade to the hole over his skate and below his glove. His indecision about going into the RVH prevented him from getting the pad properly sealed against the post, which left the hole.

If he had gone into the RVH while the puck was in the corner he would have been able to properly tuck his toe (or the entire boot of the pad) inside the post so that the toe of the pad completely seals along the post (with the glove resting right on top of the pad or overlapping the pad). Take a look at this photo:

Campbell's skate was (essentially) positioned like the goalie on the far left. That view gives you a good view of the hole created by positioning the skate blade right along the post. Transitioning to the RVH from his standing position hugging the post led to the sloppy RVH that failed to seal the post. If you watch the video of the goal, Campbell is still standing with his left skate blade hugging the left post when the puck goes off the slot attacker's stick. At that point, there is simply no time to go into RVH and get the skate tucked behind the post to create a full seal.

If he was going to go into the RVH, it should have been earlier instead of a reaction to the puck coming toward him following the pass. His better option once he didn't commit to the RVH earlier would have been to push forward and just go into a regular butterfly with his left leg extending beyond the post as the puck dribbled toward him. This also would have eliminated any hole.

This was a very fluky goal that is still a routine save 99% of the time even with the indecisive/improper RVH save selection. But the indecision and poor save selection left that 1% chance of a puck finding that hole. This goal is a great example of his sloppy edge/post work that @Snubbed4Vezina brought up earlier in this thread. Campbell is currently seeing a disproportionate amount of pucks finding these low percentage holes, but a breakdown in his fundamentals is also creating more of those low percentage holes than there should be.

Husso struggling again allowing 4 goals on 17 shots v. the Blue Jackets this afternoon. This after Derek Lalonde told reporters this week that he's re-evaluating the Wings' goalie situation.

I've had big questions about Husso's mental toughness after the way he performed for the Blues v. the Wild in the playoffs a few postseasons ago. Looks like he might be playing himself out of a starting job in Detroit.

I don’t miss him at all. He’s simply not very good.

Hyman with a first period hatty in what’s basically a must win for the Oil if they want to turn this thing around.

Good to see Seattle falling back down to earth this season.
