Around The NHL #13

Sabres have sort of been out partners through this rebuild. Similar period. Crazy long. One key difference is that the Sabres won two lotteries and got Eichel as a consolation prize.

Anyways, the Coyotes are now holding a wild card spot and Sabres are 6th worst in the league. So what did the Sabres do wrong? Why do they still suck?
They don't play team defense.

Sabres #32 in Goals Against 1st Period - you won't win many games when you are the worst team in the league at playing defense in the 1st period

Also, 6 head coaches in the past 10 years. Lack of patience and stability.

Culture

Exactly. Which is why those meaningless points last season weren’t so meaningless

Hey how about that Joey Daccord getting a shutout in the Winter Classic with a Sun Devil logo on his helmet.

Also Biz name-dropping Oceanside like anyone knew what he was talking about.
I want his winter classic jersey.

Sens two hires range from underwhelming to plain bad.
They LOVE boring, vanilla, milquetoast mediocrity. They can’t get enough of it. It’s their identity and culture. They named their team “The Senators”. I mean COME ON!!!!

really good questions. I dont know the answers, but I will mention there is a lot of hockey left this yr. I think there are 2 things that have really helped the coyotes this season… goal tending and 2.3.4th line scoring. And maybe lastly, great D by two newcomers, Durzi and Kes

My two favorite teams are Coyotes & Buffalo (I know glutton for punishment)...and I thought Buffalo had turned a corner last season...but looks like it was an aberration.

Coyotes are climbing and Buffalo is going to continue being Buffalo I guess...no hope in sight.

Goaltending. That's where it all starts. Sabres and Senators have lack of. Why do you think the Oilers started off like they did?

“It’s funny how it works. You’re playing good and you’re not scoring or putting up points and then you have the worst game of your season and you end up with two points and everybody thinks you were great. You can’t always look at that stuff, but overall, I feel like my play is back to where it’s supposed to be and I’m having fun and feeling good, body-wise.”

Nice to see. I don't think he was given the accolades or support when he was Captain for the Yote's.

Wait, I don't think there was a captain after Doan retired. OEL was never captain, IIRC

edit: Nope, my bad, he was Captain, and I'm getting old.

It was a year after Tocchet was hired as the head coach. OEL was expected to have the captaincy that year and when Tocchet came on and decided not to name one it opened a rift between them that never healed.

I think that McBain may be captain material in a couple of years. He is well spoken, handles himself well with the media, and seems to have garnered the respect of the players.

Naw, not a captain
More like a major, a major pain in the arse to play against.
Jets have been flying high since naming Lowry captain. McBain is a similar player, in a similar on-ice role, just much earlier in his career.

I think McBain would be a wonderful choice. We don't get to see the locker room dynamics though, so it's hard for us to choose.

Lot of support for Zucker from NHL fans today.
Good to hear and there should be. Zucker let up and could have nailed him harder, Cousins should have been ready after delivering the hit he did. After Cousins went down, Zucker looks at him, like what the hell, you weren't expecting a hit?
