Around The NHL #13

The media whining about this now is the same media that crucified Players last year for not wearing Pride jerseys and are unfortunately too dumb to see the direct correlation between them. Either you let Players chose what they support or you don't imo and if you let them have free choice leave them alone when they make that choice. For those advocating let them wear what they want in warmup how do you think Ovie wearing a Putin hat or anyone wearing a MAGA hat would be received?

I don't see how MAGA or Putin fit the description of heritage any more than a swastika does. No one has MAGA or Putin in their blood from birth.

Cultural/heritage celebrations are about their native colors, dances, foods, artwork, traditions, etc. Not politicians or political groups. The difference is plain as day IMO. Celebrating that you are Russian is completely different than celebrating your love for Putin or Donald Trump.

Edit:
Celebrating the annual 1200+ year tradition of slaughtering thousands of dolphins during Olavsoka in the Faroe Islands would certainly be an issue for many though. So there are some actual cultural things that could be controversial.

Why does Heritage matter? And who gets to decide what is part of someone's heritage? Just leave it all out or leave alone folks who think differently, it's not that hard.

I agree. The cause is the NHL allowing "Native American Heritage Night" and any other "appreciation" night. The affect (big surprise! lol) is that some players will actually relate and want to participate. The NHL's wounds are self-inflicted. You can't expect the fans to get into it and on the other hand threaten the players that do too.

Edit: These appreciation nights are phony AF anyways. Nothing but a hollow business-related decision to impact profitability.

I didn't say it was, but if you want to celebrate it, do it with family or whatever, not with the world. I couldn't give two hoots about her heritage, just like others don't give two hoots about mine.
All this negativity over a mask?
What the hell is wrong with you?

Appreciation nights are phony.
Trying to say that MAF celebrating his wife’s heritage on his mask is about as stupid as saying Mike Smith couldn’t celebrate his children on his though.
I don't mean that the cause is phony. I meant that the reason a professional hockey team would have an appreciation night, in general, is based on marketing. A business decision. And I also think the fact that the NHL tried to not only stop, but threatened Fleury over a hockey mask (at a team event to celebrate Native Americans no less!) shows how shallow their intent really is. They continue to try and pretend that they're all inclusive and continue to show that they actually aren't really. That is why I call it phony.

Whatever happened to a simple "fan" appreciation night? They don't seem to backfire and have less controversy.

I read that the NHL prohibits players from wearing specialty equipment on theme nights.

I guess that means that if Fleury would've worn that mask on any other night there wouldn't even be a conversation about it? It's literally just because it was tied to a theme night!?

If that's the truth, it sure seems like a strange rule to have and enforce to me. Now the league just looks like "asshats" again over it.

Edit:
For the record, I don't have anything against theme or appreciation nights. Just how the NHL handles them and all the negative press that comes with how they handle them. They really need to update some of these rules. Likewise, I wouldn't miss them either.

Oh, I agree with you 100%. Was not aware of the NHL hypocrisy until now though. :thumbd:

We had none of this shit years ago, so why now? Why can't we all keep our beliefs and traditions or whatever to our self? Why try to make headlines. Sorry, the players should come to work and do what they are paid for, and that is play hockey. They are employee's. If they don't want to follow the rules, quit. You would think Fluery would be more focused on his shit play this year rather than celebrating his wife's heritage in front of fans. He can celebrate that at his home, with his and hers family.

That's what it is, stuff. Stupid stuff many players are trying to get away with.
That's pretty cold.

As for the NHL, shooting themselves in the foot. It is a goalie mask. They are individualized by every goalie in the league. Why did this one cause a stir with the league? Oh right, because they are idiots.

As I posted above they nixed allowing Logan Thompson from putting a cancer ribbon on his mask.

Has to be more to this than a bunch of old rich guys deciding being stupid….. even if they are.

Good to see you can find what our Alzheimer’s boy Jakey can’t! LOL

Dreger says the Oilers are waiting for the players to “earn” a trade before it happens.

So you’re drowning and because you’re not trying to save yourself well enough the Oilers are perfectly content letting you sink.

So does that mean the team wants them to play better or worse? Could be interpreted either way.

My sense was that the Oilers have played so poorly so they’re not deserving of the roster being upgraded.

Here’s the thing though. If they don’t acquire a goalie now, then when? There is nothing high quality in the organization so the answer will have to come externally. And there is no reason to think the cost will change. Plus considering how few quality options make it to UFA and then the challenge of recruiting to Edmonton, the answer will need to come through trade.

Oilers have been better of late.

1st month of season: 2.58 GF/GP, 4.17 GA
Last 2 weeks: 3.86 and 3.14

Still letting in too many. The best teams are sub 3 goals allowed per game.

There is too much legacy around Holland to fire him so they will ride out (waste) the season until his contract is up at year end. I am sure he will then be “promoted” to some sort of advisory role.
