Around The NHL #13

Friendly reminder there are Winnipeggers among us!

That said, a bit worrying the early attendance issues in the Peg. A few years of chaos and that is the result, I guess. Small market in a tough economy on top of everything happening around the rink (coaches quitting, lockeroom issues, constant rumours...)
Could be wrong, but I think I'm the only Pegger around these parts. I'm proud to call it home but it doesn't bother me if others want to trash it. Most of the trashing is aimed at Canadian media anyways, and I'm no fan of the Canadian media.

Winnipeg has the smallest arena (outside of Mullett) and the smallest consumer market in the entire league. We were assured that none of that would matter because their gate would never flag. Kind of interested to see if this is an aberration or a trend, because if it turns out to be a trend I can legitimately see questions start to pop up about the franchise's viability.

They won't pop up on BoH or HF, of course, because reality doesn't exist here without perspective goggles. :D
Actually there's a rather spirited discussion on the subject in BoH right now. :D

The Jets are co-owned by David Thomson and Mark Chipman. Thomson net worth around $58B. The Jet's aren't going anywhere.

2nd richest NA sports owner if I remember correctly and a long ways ahead of any other NHL Owner.

The plandemic screwed up a lot of things for a lot of people. Trump said we can't have the cure worse than the cause, but here we are.

He eats and spits out guys like Isbia and Meruelo.

Boys I don’t think you’re getting the point here.

Given Winnipeg is a small market I would believe the fanbase there is a lot more entrenched inside the franchise than most.

Given all the rumblings of inner turmoil within the locker room the past couple of years (actually it could go back to the Dustin Byfuglin saga) must be giving them a case of the major “WTFs??” and it’s turning into empty seats now.

Yeah. Trouba wanting out, Byfuglien giving up, Dubois wanting out, Hellebuyck wanting out... it all contributed.

Probably a bigger factor was ownership raising prices constantly on the STH. They felt they could because there was a long wait list for new STH. Then the tide changed.

I thought there were a few...I am a former winterpeg guy. Maybe the others are as well?

Hellebuyck and Scheifele signed long term deals. We all know why Trouba wanted out, and I think Dubois wanted more $$$ than management thought he was worth and the Jets got a not bad return.

Nope.

Deal with it.
Is that the best you got?

Could be wrong but I think @hbk is too.
Isn't hbk a Saskabusher?

I don't think anyone here is actually anti Winnipeg. It's just fun to point out valid reasons for attendance to dip being rejected for one team ajd and broadly accepted for another. Caring that much about another team's attendance and business has always struck me as weird as f***.

I thought so, too. However everything I found online places Chipman’s net worth at $500m, where Mereulo is at $2b and Ibishia $5b. Jets co-owner David Thomson is $10b+ and maybe as high as $50b.

It's Thomson who has the money and he's north of $50 billion. I should say it's the Thomson Family.
