Around The NHL #13

Easy. We finish with the 9th worst record and move up to 1st via the lottery. Then we trade a couple of 2nds for a late 1st at the draft.

Done. Pick 1st and in the 30s.
I think he's saying the Coyotes are gonna win the Cup

I suppose it'd be in poor taste to point out that Winnipeg has the NHL's smallest bespoke NHL arena, wouldn't it?

Ah, I guess I shouldn't indulge in schadenfreude. It sucks to be in a less-than-full arena, and honestly the assholes who have been trolling us on social media for so many years aren't usually the ones who pay for tickets to the games.

Meh.... they'll just pivot to the ticket price comparison.

They'll also be fine with TNSE having so many other revenue streams surrounding the arena.

I remember a bit ago when I pointed out that the nhl has stayed in AZ because PHX is the 7th largest market in the US, and got all kinds of Canadians scoffing that that doesn’t mean anything because what size “hockey market” is AZ.

Winnipeg’s current struggle is a good example of why those people are so full of shit.

Winnipeg has the smallest arena (outside of Mullett) and the smallest consumer market in the entire league. We were assured that none of that would matter because their gate would never flag. Kind of interested to see if this is an aberration or a trend, because if it turns out to be a trend I can legitimately see questions start to pop up about the franchise's viability.

They won't pop up on BoH or HF, of course, because reality doesn't exist here without perspective goggles. :D

Doubt it’s an aberration because they lagged before! Winnipeg had attendance problems in the 80’s and 90’s too when they were bad. Hell, I think that’s one of the reasons they were moved to a certain desert state.

My point of frustration isn’t even that their attendance is lagging. It makes sense to me for a middling team in a small market to have lagging attendance in a post-pandemic high inflation world. My deal is that we for years and years also had many valid excuses for why attendance was bad and we’re laughed at and told we should just support the franchise no matter what. But now they have all these excuses. So hypocritical.

The hypocrisy isn't what bugs me - it's that most of the rest of the NHL world will swallow it whole and back them up to the hilt because they have this nostalgia for the Jets that they'd never have for us.

Winnipeg and QC markets aren’t projected to reach 1,000,000 until 2035.

Phoenix market hit 5,000,000 this year.

Why would the NHL fight to keep hockey in Arizona?

Friendly reminder there are Winnipeggers among us!

That said, a bit worrying the early attendance issues in the Peg. A few years of chaos and that is the result, I guess. Small market in a tough economy on top of everything happening around the rink (coaches quitting, lockeroom issues, constant rumours...)
