Sure, Babcock is a good coach, but he had monster talent to ice on the old Wings. This whole story is getting huge play from the "shock and indignation" crowd. Must be a boring September in hockey world.

He chose a few people to do what you described. Others had a much different experience. Including prospects he allegedly invited over to his house for “lunch” (individually and alone) only for them to discover when they arrived that he would demand they hand over their phone, so he could go through their texts and photos, after which he would send them on their way without lunch or conversation, or any of the stated reasons for their coming to his home. Which is manipulative, predatory, an invasion of privacy, a hostile work environment and certainly firable.

Anyway that’s the story. Not sure if it’s true. Don’t really care. It was a dumb hire to begin with. Jarmo deserves to be fired for it. Still, I hope Columbus used this as a rallying event and has a surprise season where they sneak into a wild card.
The Columbus Blue Jackets could use a goalie like Vejmelka and I would like the Coyotes to upgrade their defense, but a few things have to happen before we talk trade...

I still think we are close to a playoff bubble team, but we need to do a little tweaking, especially at D.

For good reason. We’re talking about a full blown sociopath, using a position of power to intimidate, manipulate, and flex on people. A guy who has young men’s careers in his hands to a degree. What is absolutely amazing is that this has been known about people close to Babcock since his days back in DET…probably even ANA let’s be honest. This is further proof that the old boys network of hockey culture needs to be weeded out and never allowed to seep back into the game. It’s disgusting. Hockey culture is awesome in many ways and has so many good things to offer…pieces of shit like this who ruin it need to be identified quickly and removed from being around and influencing young people. Listen to people like Chelios, Modano, Marner, Commodore, Franzen, Mark Fraser…the most absurd stories ever about this guy. Apparently even the people working concessions in DET hated his guts because of how he treated people in the building. Hope the guy can get help and fix himself one day.

Wow, never met a person like that in my life! He's not worth the attention. Good attention, bad attention, he simply isn't worth people's time.

Stop with this "old boys club" culture. This is one coach, and what he did really has nothing to do with hockey or coaching, in my opinion. Everyone has privacy rights, and that is what Babcock violated.

I'm with you. What bothers me is that people are associating other coaches his age as part of the "old boys club" which is totally wrong. Sure coaching has changed, but respect to one another hasn't, and Babcock didn't do that.

The "old boys club" culture is what leads to the Blackhawks scandal, the Team Canada scandal, the Babcock scandal, and any other situation where people are sheltered from accountability and serious issues are swept under the rug. It's been a plague on the league for decades, and only now are we starting to see cracks in it.

What I’m referring to Jakey, is the old boys network that allowed him to be hired in the first place. It’s not about anything to do with other coaches. Jarmo knew, if he did even the slightest amount of due diligence, that Babcock was a lunatic and he gave him a job anyway. That’s the old boys network. I’m all for second chances, but he’s already past that by the time Jarmo hired him. Players hating his guts and treating people poorly in DET…documented. The issues in TOR specifically with Marner…documented. Jarmo now needs to be held accountable for being a terrible judge of character and lose his job as well. There is zero excuse for hiring Mike Babcock. Just like there is zero excuse for anyone hiring Joel Quenneville or Stan Bowman, ever again. These people do not belong in the game and everyone in the hockey community needs to hold firm to that if they want to be taken seriously and if they truly have these young men’s best interests at heart.

I agree in a sense…but he is worth the attention as far as pointing out and making clear to everyone involved in hockey, that this type of conduct will not be tolerated and your career in the game will be over. I’m talking youth coaches, college coaches, any level. It needs attention and there needs to be accountability or it will just keep happening. Imagine your son just being drafted by the Jackets and starting his career, and you hearing about this incident with the guy who has that career in the palm of his hand. You’d want attention and accountability for the actions so no one else’s son had to deal with crap like that again.

The Team Canada scandal was reported to Police as soon as complaint was received. May or may not be a bad situation but to level it similar to past incidents is incorrect.

I understand, but even with those two scandals doesn't make all others guilty. I think it's the person's character, not coaching. There are assholes in every profession at every age. There are more good than bad.

I’m not sure if you are understanding what this old boys club network is really all about, so I just want to make it clear just in case. Look to Rick Tocchet as a perfect example. Maybe not his initial hiring, but more the way things were handled regarding his potential extension. Remember Dreger and other media members carrying water for Toc with stuff like, “If AZ doesn’t extend him, he’ll be the most in demand coach on the market.” Unsurprisingly, this was far from the truth. This is the old boys club at work. It includes coaches, front office people, and media members. It’s a group of old buddies that have been around the block and cover for each other, and give each other jobs and pats on the back based off of old reputation and glory days…rather than current merit, integrity or ethics. It’s emphasizes favoritism over objectivity, logic and merit.

The recent Chelios interview with chiclets was very enlightening regarding this. He said that Babcock had his media buddies in his office more than anyone. They were always around. He used those in his corner to maintain his reputation and public persona. He was “very calculated and manipulative.” While Franzen wasn’t playing with concussion issues he regularly called him a “fat pig,” and said “all of your teammates hate you.” According to Chelios he “put the poor kid through hell.” This was, you would assume, all known information that made its way through the league over the years…then the Marner and TOR stuff. This guy then STILL got ANOTHER job coaching in the NHL. Absolutely amazing.

Babcock is a dick, thats undeniable. But if he was as bad as Chelios now says why did Chelios at his age and stature not step up? I can only speak for myself but no team I was on would have a coach treat a young player that way in front of me.

You’re right, it is surprising. But he did also mention that Babcock went into Ken Holland’s office multiple times to try to get him traded, and he and his family were at a point where they really didn’t want to move and needed stability. To me it just shows how pervasive this type of stuff was in sports like hockey and football though. This “have tough skin” or, “he’s just trying to motivate you” type of stuff. It was the norm. Maybe not stuff as intense as with Babcock, but in a broad sense. It’s also just part of this power dynamic between coach/player that existed. Players knew that management typically will side with the coach on most things and cover their own ass, so a lot of times players, especially younger ones, I think were scared to ever say anything for fear of retribution or that it would hurt their career. That seems to be changing though. Surprising though that a large group of players in DET weren’t pushing back against the guy. Different times, and I guess “winning cures all.” Crazy stuff.

You are just rehashing all this Babcock shit. What does these media types have to do with coaching? They have their own opinion on coaches just like you and I.

Chelios is no saint himself. There have been many stories that would make your hair curl, same goes with Tkachuk.

Babcock may be a dick, leave it at that. There are more good people, coaches etc in sports than bad. You are trying to say one shoe fits all, and that just isn't the truth.

Huh? Did you actually read and comprehend what I said? You said I was making a big deal about this old boys club for no reason and lumping all coaches together. Which I wasn’t. Then I explained in detail what I was referring to and now you’re still saying the same thing? I’m so confused haha. Please show me where I made a “one shoe fits all” statement
