Wow, this Babcock stuff is wild. Is this guy really that much of a psycho? He just can’t help being himself haha. Nice hire Jarmo!
Unless I missed something, it seems he’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Here’s a successful coach attempting (perhaps a bit clumsily) to bridge the gap between old school and new school.

From what has been released so far it sounded to me like a team building exercise where you get to know the people you are going to spend a lot of time with?? All the talking heads are going on about some players being uncomfortable??? Is that where we are headed.....

Sadly.... probably, the irony is that the very reason Babcock is attempting to be more contemporary is because players have become uncomfortable with old school methods.

Edit: I did a little more digging and if he actually requested all photos from players phones, it's a bit too much... quite a bit.

I have not seen anyone saying he requested all photos except Biznasty and that's based on a former players texts from what I saw.

I'm open to being completely wrong but this really looks like nothing to me.

Yeah this is what I was referencing. If he’s like, “hey let’s get to know each other a little better and exchange some pictures of family and share some commonalities etc,” that’s all good I suppose. But the way it has been portrayed it seems to be more like, “I want to know what kind of person you are…open up your phone and let me see what you’ve got on your camera roll.” Like a character test. In general I’m in support of the core of what Babcock tries to reach in his players, but it’s his methods that are a bit over the top and uncomfortable. ESPECIALLY because he has been canned for this type of behavior in the past…the fact that this is coming up before the season has even started is that much more alarming.

Welp......

Let's see if they replace him with Joel Quinneville.

UPDATE: Phew.... we dodged one.

When I see a situation unfold like Babcock I think to myself, "Yotes gonna Yote" but thankfully it's a different team for once. Been following this pretty hard, this entire thing was just dumb and completely unnecessary. Imo equally as dumb / unnecessary as our Mitch Miller draft situation and probably even more dumb than the John Chayka workout controversy.

Why did you hire Babs in the first place, why did Babs go out of his way to f*** up so hard, why is anyone actually surprised when something this happens.

Anyway glad we dodged a scandal for once. AT is a good coach and more importantly a good person, glad we have him running our team rather than some psycho sociopath

I’ve seen enough… this is creepy…

Yeah it's completely f***ed.

I mean, from my perspective it might be worth following this if you're curious -- for me one of the most screwed up things I've ever seen is this guy intentionally healthy scratching a 40 yo Mike Modano multiple times so his career ended at 1499 GP... Mike Modano is a classy player who also happens to probably be the best NHLer ever born in the states, wth are you doing Mike Babcock. And here he is yet again doing things that are similarly sociopathic, wow what a surprise.

Anyway, what he did here is really messed up as well, it gets more messed up the deeper you dig. And I truly believe that as weird as this sounds, imo CBJ is clearly better off in the medium to long term without Babs as their coach, and as hockey fans we are all better off with Chiclets than without.

Longer convo but yeah, this entire situation is complete nonsense and for the sake of all Jackets fans / players (and hockey fans / players in general), I'm glad this particular chapter is over and the league appears to be fully turning the page on this clown

He also put local boy Spezza in the press box on opening night for his first game as a Leaf. Spezza had many Family abd friends in attendance. Babcock just does not know how to manage and interact with people.

The PA statement was basically 'get f***ed' so there was probably merit to pushing him out. Jarmo should go too, but I get the impression he wanted an experienced coach to wrangle a team that has some sneaky culture issues.

Happy the Coyotes are not in this position. You've got Fantili and K.Johnson, why are you hiring Babcock in the first place? To be the bad cop with Laine? I don't get it.

Go scoop some vaunted junior coach like BA with with Tourigny. How hard can it be if AZ can do it without a gd arena?

100% agree with the bolded above.

Whatever anyone might want to say about the Yotes in general, Bill Armstrong has balls. He goes and signs Veggie from some random league, I don't think any other GM would do that. It doesn't work out every single time (see Jaskin) but he's clearly trying to do the right thing and ends up winning more often than not. For instance drafting Cooley over Wright (looks like a good decision), drafting Sima / But last year when no one had heard of them, even hiring a guy like Tourigny at all instead of a psychotic retread like Babcock.

Re: NHLPA, there's more to it, according to the Chiclets guys the PA basically told them to GFY until Biz responded with, "yo, talk to these ppl" and then suddenly they realize that Gaudreau / Jenner are covering their own ass rather than telling the entire story (which makes sense and I do not blame those players at all, what else are they supposed to do). Anyway, I'm pretty hot about it so I kind of don't want to get into it rn, just wanted to say if anyone is curious the entire thing is a complete sh*tstorm.

Anyway I don't disagree with what you said, but expecting ppl to do the right thing every time is maybe not realistic, especially in an old boys / insular network like the NHL.

That said I can't tell you how relieved / happy I am that I do expect BA and AT to do the right thing, and so far they've delivered every time. Imo we are in a very good spot rn with our on-ice mgmt and I for one am extremely thankful for that

100% agree. And that's not even counting the other stuff that we're all aware of (ie Marner, Franzen, Modano as I previously said, that's just what we know about I'm 100% sure there are other even more messed up things).

And honestly... if a situation like this can get you and I to agree on anything -- I'd argue Babcock is exceptional (in a bad way, but still exceptional regardless). What a f***ing clown.

***

To anyone else who might be reading this, I'm legitimately hot about what happened here and won't be responding to any messages in the next day or two. Suffice it to say that imo his nonsense here was next level

If my boss asks to see my phone for any reason the answer is, "LOL go kick rocks." I can't understand anybody defending that behavior, it's just dumb and a gross violation of privacy.

If Babcock wants pictures then players can voluntarily submit them, but there is no way he should be touching anybody's phone for any reason.

I love all the haters acting like Chiclets had some vendetta against CLB and was making stuff up…like they would actually bring something like that up on the pod without concrete proof from multiple players haha. Lots of deleted tweets today!

Because of past troubles, I thought for sure there had to be some spin on this Babcock story. I just can't believe what he did, my god what an ass, especially just after he said he wanted to improve his relationship with players after what ex players said about him.

For a franchise that has done f*** all in its 22 years, save for a magical sweep of Tampa, the Jackets don’t get near as much shit as they should. Can’t imagine what people would say about this team if they were in the Sunbelt.

Because he’s such a good person, he’ll be a more effective coach, than good coaches that are not as good of people.

Can’t like this enough. As two old farts I’m certain we both have had many “old school” coaches that we love and I know I would have loved to have seen Mike be more contemporary and succeed…. But this appears to be over the top messed up.

This comes down the person himself. He has no morals. I thought much of the talk about him were just pissed off players, but this, like you said, is over the top.
