TML can pay him the most money at this time with Mathews having the least amount of risk. If he could play in AZ for the same money/term today, I think he would do it, but thats not how the CBA works.
So it's only because he could sign right now vs next July that he chose to stay in Toronto?

Maybe AM likes crappy cold wet weather where the gravel ridden snow on the roadsides doesnt melt, and turns an ugly gray color. Not to mention the fickle fans who will turn on you quicker than the time it takes to say “hoser eh?”

Wishful thinking. I don't think AM had or has any intentions playing for the Coyote's in his prime. He's in TO for another five years. He could very well play his entire career in TO. He could end up being the best Leaf player, ever. I think that is more important to him than playing for the Coyote's.

Have you ever been to TO? It's really a great city. It's right up there with LA and NY with a lot less crime.

@ 13+ mill today and the term in years, too much injury risk to wait a year versus locking in as the highest paid player. Risking $50 mill is not worth it for him or anyone for that matter.

Nah, he chose the rate, he chose the Team, and he agreed to give them one more year than he wanted to. Just reality. If he was really concerned with risk he would have signed for 8 years at a higher aav

4 years at $50 mill+ takes the risk off the table. Waiting a year to sign anywhere as a UFA and risking injury during that time is huge risk.

He has already made more than that. He has told everyone who listened that he wanted to stay in Toronto, then signed a deal a year early and for a year more than he wanted at a Cap hit most would agree he could have demanded more. When someone tells you something over and over maybe just believe them??

You act like money and term are not a factor since he already made a lot of money. This same logic would apply to every good player (he already made a lot of money). TML made him the highest paid player and for less term then they would have wanted. The decision was, I can be the highest paid player in the NHL, and can still sign another contract after this one when the cap is much higher. If he had signed for $ 10 mill a year for 8 years, then I would believe more so that he wanted to stay in Toronto, that would be a discount.

So basically there is really no situation that could have realistically happened where you would say Matthews actually just wanted to stay in Toronto?

Put yourself in AM's shoes. Where would you want to play TO or Phoenix? I don't think it was even a hard decision for AM. He has no intention to play for the Coyote's in his prime, probably never, regardless of how much money the Yote's can throw at him. He has a chance to be the best TML player of all time, with a real chance to win the SC. Do you know how big an honor that would be to be considered the best TML player? The TML's are the at the top of the food chain in the NHL. AM wants TO, and TO wants AM, end of story.

Messi is playing in Miami...nuff said.

If he extended for below market rates, say $10 mill per year. Then you would know he really wants to stay there and win, not stay because of the money. It would give TML more money to attract and keep other good players. Like when Doan signed for less with the Coyotes, he wanted to stay in AZ.

Players think they can win regardless of the team, except for a few doormats like the Coyotes or others in a rebuild. Mathews is the top paid NHL player, he got as much as he could get, good for him, I would do the same thing as would almost all other players in their prime that are top 10 NLH players.

So no NHL Players really want to be where they are, gotcha

TO can pay more than anyone. AM also will get more endorsements in TO than he would "living at home." I think AM wants to play his entire career in TO. Of course much can change, but I believe that is what he hopes.
