Around The NHL #13

Extension offer came from ownership at the start of the season. Why wouldn’t Treliving take that? At least then you still get paid. There is no guarantee he gets hired this summer.
Life is a journey, not just a career.

He signed a goalie who was 2nd in Vezina last season? What should he have done when Gaudreau and Tkachuk informed him they were leaving? I think he did a really good job except for the coach. The coach showed all year he wasn't getting the most out of players.
He traded his best player for a player that got half his points from his previous year, and lost his second best player for zilch. Signed a 32 year old, almost over the hill vet long term because he looked at his previous years stats. Signed a 29 year old D to a eight year deal to save face. His best C didn't produce like previous because he lost his wingers. Yup, it's the coaches fault alright.

So you think he should have kept Tkachuk and watch him walk for nothing this summer? You think the Coach played no role in so many players underachieving? And those other 2 leaving? The best Players hate the Coach and the talk says expect more to leave unless he's gone. The GM left because he hated the Coach and did not want to work with him.

The GM hired the coach. He made his bed, or should I say mess.

If Ownership had allowed this months ago they would have made playoffs and kept better GM.

I think it was the Flames letting him walk away or get canned. Different optics but same result.
They offered him an extension but would not allow the Coach firing. Since that time its has become abundantly clear the Coach could not continue.

I thought I read he lost a power struggle to Sutter? I guess not if Maloney gets to can him. Bizarre.

Look at this.
Shades of Tippett being made HC and VP of hockey ops over Chayka.

Besides I can’t see Treveling going back to the same thing he had here being under Maloney again.

Treliving was offered the extension at training camp. Not a month ago. I assume he was fired (not extended) based on subsequent performance. Sutter was also fired based on performance.

This comment says/confirms a lot about Sutter, I think. Probably more to it than just performance.

"I interviewed 25 players, coaches, coaching staff, training staff, spoke to prominent agents who represent key players on our team, and it became clear to me that we need a new voice to guide us forward," Flames president of hockey operations and interim general manager Don Maloney said."

Not completely accurately. He had an extension offer during season and it was still available well before until he left. The Owner had all intentions of keeping Sutter until pretty much everyone said they hated his guts and would not want to play for or work with him any more. Why the Owner didn't see this before Treliving left is beyond me.
