Yeah thats why I say its a massive gamble to wait that long. We are banking on a team being in a playoff position despite their goaltending situation being bad and willing to give up good assets to get a deal done. There could just as easily be no takers and then we lose him for nothing. We should be proactive in this situation and either sign him or trade him this summer.

I assume that is what the Jets want to do in terms of timeline. I guess they didn’t get the bites that they wanted to cut a deal.

There will be takers for both by the TDL… I have no doubts about that but it would be better to get this resolved in the offseason. I trust Chevy the Grinder to use the right timing for this.

I think Chevy has probably gotten lots of bites, just not the big ones he is hoping for. Very few teams want to give up serious assets, either for a one year rental or a 1 year rental followed by then having to give out the big long term overpaid UFA deal.

Teams are also waiting to actually see what the cap is going to be next year. The rumor is it could be anywhere from 90 to 95 next season. It will open a lot of room for teams and the UFA crop next year could be nuts

I heard $88M a couple weeks ago. $90-$95M (especially if it was $95M) would make next offseason INSANE!

I heard $88m next year with a similar jump the following year.

I think the the NHL themselves have said at least $4 million jump to $87.5m with a potential increase for more. If we get a $95m jump that is $11.5m, that's a pretty massive jump but it could happen I guess.

There will 100% be for Scheif, I'm not sold on Helle being a 100% so I'd rather just not wait to find out.

Either way the offers at the TDL won't be better than now. They will be rental prices. That is the likely hold up now, no team is willing to give more than rental prices and then have to turn around and give the players their big UFA extensions.

I don't know why they took away conditional picks on resigning.

It was an impediment on the team re-signing the player, so the NHLPA wanted them gone as they hurt the player staying if they wanted to.

Yeah I suppose that's true. Removes a lot of the advantages for teams like us that could make trading players more palatable.

They shouldn't allow a NMC unless the player is 30.
The smallest list of teams not traded to on a NTC should be 6 teams.

What would the NHL give the NHLPA to even consider this in bargaining? It would have to be a lot, and since all the big market teams are only impacted by them when trying to dump a player, I don't see it happening.

What they should do is have a limit as to how many players can have a certain destination on their no trade list. For example, each team can only be on let’s say 50 players no trade list. Once 50 players list a certain team on their list no other players can use that destination.

Yeah NHLPA would never go for that ever.

That is getting a is a little rich, hopefully TNSE are ok. I remember when the cap was about about $60 million Canadian when Mark bought Atlanta in 2011-12 (The Canadian dollar was at par).

I think the simplest solution is to eliminate trade protection entirely. This would require locking out the players or offering significant concessions though. I doubt the owners think it is worth it.
For an issue many owners don't really care that much about, and if anything gives them a competitive advantage. Trade protection in reality is a minor inconvenience compared to CBA rules that could royally f*** us, like actual player control of destination before age 27.

Agreed I hate the idea of going into the season with Scheifele and Helly on the roster and unsigned. Chevy needs to pick his direction and make his moves. I’d love to keep both and eat the back end of their contracts. I could also embrace a change over with a couple nice pieces in return. What doesn’t sit well is a gong show season waiting for another shoe to drop.
He probably has picked his direction but little you can do if players won’t resign but no one offers much for them.

Bought them for 230m and worth 650m.
He bought the Jets for 170 million and with what Ottawa just sold for the team is worth more than 650. In Winnipeg the team is probably worth at least 750+ and if they ever wanted to sell the team to somebody who wanted to relocate them, they would get more than a billion,

The 230m included the 60m the NHL got.
