Putting in Paul Coffey as the assistant coach is so unserious. What qualifies a guy who hasn't been a coach at any level other than for 3 years on a kids team in Toronto about a decade ago to be an assistant coach on an aspiring NHL cup contender?

Hoping for the St. Louis effect I guess. But this reeks of another old boys member that has the ear of the owner.

Edit: Apparently their new HC was McDavid's junior coach lmao. So they bring in his agent to be president and now his junior coach, is McDavid the actual GM of the team lol. In all seriousness if this is how much sway he has in the front office then it's no wonder they have won nothing. This is taking appeasement to a whole new level.

It's so much worse. St Louis at least said he wanted to coach at some point. Paul Coffey in his media rounds said that he had to be convinced by Ken (Holland) and Jeff (Jackson) and he was happy with what he was doing.

Do they think that having these guys from the 80s Oilers behind the bench is going to sell tickets? What merit are they using to hire him outside of his success on the ice 40 years ago? It's crazy

He doesn't even want the gig lmao. Not that I blame him one bit for not wanting to get involved with that group of players.

Watching the Columbus game and Laine still doing that move where on the forecheck on the dump-in he waves his stick and d-man and flies by instead of stopping up and engaging in a puck battle against the boards to try to win possession.

Laine is who he is. Just a one dimensional top 6 player that doesn't even have his shot anymore. It's looking more and more like the org was correct not to invest in him long term. It's too bad cause he had a crazy amount of talent but never really figured out how to get the most out of it.

The org was correct? f*** that. If Laine had wanted to be here, the org would have been happy to lock him up for life.

Can’t blame the Oilers for trying to do what they can to keep McDavid.
Without Draistl and McDavid, they are a comical bad team
3 years left on the deal for mcdavid
2 years for Draisaitl

They'll do as much to cater McDavid as possible (and rightfully so probably)

take away the 2 best players on any team and they'd probably be quite bad
where are we w/o helle and scheifele?

And with Helly and Scheifele we're tied for 15th in points percentage with Anaheim. So...
