How do you build THAT bad of a team around McDavid? In hindsight, if he "only" had a Hart worthy season last season, instead of the best season in recent memory, they probably miss the playoffs.
1. Terrible cap management. They have made some horrific unforced errors (Ceci, Kulak, Kane to an extent), and unfortunately, they whiffed on Campbell in the worst way. Nurse was extended at what was about the worst possible moment for the team.
2. They might as well not dress more than their top 5 forwards. Their depth is basically non-existent, and they haven't done that good a job addressing that issue.
3. As good as Ekholm is, they lack that #1 stalwart on the back-end. Many do, but with their superstars up front, it really shows in this case.

Looking at recent contenders and Cup winners (Boston, Carolina, Vegas, Colorado in 2022, Tampa, even Pittsburgh), none of them have been as top-heavy as the Oilers are right now. Drai and McDavid have averaged 22 minutes a night for years now - at some point, that has to become a burden. They have no support for those two after RNH, Hyman and Kane, nor can they afford that anyway. If one of them has an off-game, how do you compensate? As for the goaltending, I'd imagine there will be some mean reversion at some point, but holy shit, is it ever bad right now.

If only Oscar Klefbom hadn't crumbled down with his never-ending injuries, McDavid could already have won his Cups. He was the young minute-munching defenseman that they only managed to replace last Spring with Ekholm, and he was locked up at a crazily good contract to boot. With a healthy Klefbom, Nurse likely doesn't get his overpayment, and he might have had an easier role too. What could have been...

Their defense and team defense is also pretty bad.

Any team with Darnell Nurse as #1 is going to be bad defensively but I don't think they're 31st overall bad. The argument around here towards the end of last year was that the Jets were being sunk by the goaltending letting in a bad early goal and having to chase the game, seems like Edmonton is having the same issue.

They have the Sharks next so they will likely either get some confidence or be in complete despair lol
Potential game of the year. Schadenfreude edition.

To be the two worst teams in the league and in the same division is quite an accomplishment.

The Taylor Hall trade really amplified their downfall.

This really is the big thing. As I understand the "Moneyball" formula:
1) Get elite players at whatever cost needed to acquire them
2) Fill the rest of your cap space with the most cost-efficient players imaginable.

To say the Oilers have been an unmitigated disaster at Step 2 would be an exercise in ironic understatement.

Did Sara Orlesky have a Show on YTV back in the 90s?

Or is this just a Doppleganger?

3rd period collapse by Toronto or Ottawa imposing their will. Hard for me to figure out which option but Stutzle (4 points) and Giroux (3 points) both had monster games.

Leafs 4th line is just atrocious... on the same level as some of the really bad Jets 4th lines from the years past. Reeves was a somewhat effective player during the Vegas run in 17-18 but not the same guy anymore. Dubas for all his faults never built a line that you were worried might get scored against everytime they stepped on ice. Nylander looks to be on another level. I hope Scheifele's aging curve is as nice as Giroux's has been so far.

Steve Dangle has been absolutely spitting venom on his podcast about this Leafs team, he is probably going to go off after this game again.

Sanderson is also a hell of a d-man... and to think some of us expected he might fall to us to 10 in his draft year.

Watching the Kings vs Piss Knights game and PLD's motivation level looks about that of playing a mid-January, early start Saturday afternoon away game against an Eastern Conference team like the Sabres while it is snowing and -20 outside. I know he's gonna turn it around for a few games any game now but watching a guy that big, that strong and skilled be so mid in so many games is frustrating to watch.

Treliving has definitely put his spin on that team. Made them less deep and worse defensively all in the quest for grit amd toughness.

Agreed. He's such a hot and cold player. There is no middle ground for him.

Between seeing that in CBj and the recent San Jose : Philly game, it’s a medical miracle that Torta still alive.

They f***ed me in the survivor pool, I should have known better than to take then this week.
I got my obligatory Leafs strike taking them to beat Chicago in like round 1B I think. Jets keep me alive for another day. Dallas and Carolina the only real monsters I got left to draw on.
