Right so blatantly abusing ltir gets you a cup but heaven forbid you help broker a trade for cap purposes.... what is Vegas losing?
Vegas is such a well managed/administered franchise. Lawyers would be world class.

They must have some advanced stats a few generations ahead of Corsi.

Sounds to me like Vegas had plenty of opportunity to learn about the NTC before making that trade, but I guess the NHL decided that Ottawa needed further punishment after McPhee presented his case...

I like the Sens getting dumped on as much as the next guy, but the optics of stripping a 1st from them while Vegas just blatantly abused the cap and got a Cup out of it and Chicago was rewarded with a generational player for covering up sexual assault for a decade aren’t doing the NHL in favours in their quest to quell accusations of anti-Canadian/small market bias.

Vegas did the same thing that Tampa did and the rules allow for. No reason to punish them for that.

Completely agree on Chicago though.

The reading I've been doing seems to say that Dorion outright lied to McPhee about Dadonov's NTC submission.

The new owner is pissed. Accusing the NHL of not disclosing during the sale process. Can the league head office look anymore bush league.

I wouldn't be shocked if there was a lawsuit incoming.

Monetary value of picks is pretty well established at this point. Losing a first round pick is like ~5-10 million in value.

I mean it's laughable to believe that Vegas or any NHL franchise traded for a player and didn't have lawyers pore over the contract/terms... as if Vegas didn't talk to dadonovs lawyer

It's ironic that the NHL is saying that the Sens under previous ownership withheld information from Vegas and now they're getting accused of withholding information during the sale process to the new owner. I know it probably gets settled behind closed doors but I hope Andlauer embarrasses the league.

OK, but does that seem reasonable? Would an NHL GM make a boldfaced lie about something that is easily verifiable? I mean, the league has records of this stuff, right? And does that excuse Vegas of not doing their due diligence? As others have said, this just reeks of the league wanting to keep certain franchises happy, and if that means shit kicking one of the undesirables, who cares?

I hope Ottawa makes a lot of noise over this, and as for Vegas.... well, let's just say this scenario has always made me smile...

Ottawa has made quite a bit of noise about it today, their new owner has said many times it was something that could've been entirely avoidable by Dorion.

I think the penalty ends up being reduced because of the new ownership, but Friedman reported on NHL Network today that many within the league have been saying the penalty is this harsh because Ottawa was deliberately withholding information when the league was investigating (again, prior to Andlauer taking over).

It has also been stated that Vegas wouldn't let it go and kept pushing for punishment even though the NHL wasn't going to discipline them.

Fat chance the NHL comes out with this penalty had it been us pushing for punishment. I'm getting a bit sick if the preferential treatment some favored orga get

Vegas might be a league favourite but they wanted to ensure the other GMs knew they weren't pulling the wool over everyone's eyes with this.

I'd expect the Jets to do the same if it were them in Vegas' situation. The punishment may not have been as harsh if Ottawa cooperated with the league in investigating - some mea culpa and new ownership and they can get away with a fine or a later round pick, but the league does not like to be jerked around by teams lying to them and they can't let themselves be seen as pushovers or none of these investigations have any teeth.

People's anger is misplaced here, people just see Vegas and blame them but Ottawa holds the most blame here.

Could absolutely use a link for this, because it's clear this issue will never die on Twitter so I might as well improve my backing.

Oh, I'm not angry at Vegas. I just think they have a bigger pull with the league then they should.

My issue isn't with the punishment but more with the apparent lack of transparency from the league during a billion dollar sale that is helping to keep franchise values record high for the owners. This and even the Pinto investigation should have been disclosed by the league to the owner. The timing also reeks of wanting to ensure the sale went through prior to announcing the punishment. Just things the league really should have done better.

Agree, and if these were not in fact disclosed, since they are franchise-value altering circumstances, I would expect OTT ownership to pursue this through their legal reps and likely extract some form of concession, esp given that the heavy penalties are partly due to failures of transparency on presale OTT's part.

The question would be who bears the liability for those failures to divulge, but I suspect that as this all washes out we're looking at a deferred or reduced penalty eventually, with precedent firmly established.

A 1st round pick is pretty fricking steep

If that's the case I hope he really does.

canucks have scored more goals tonight then the sharks have the whole season...
Everything keeps going in for them. PDO is now 1.089. Shooting 16.08%! They're almost as far ahead of the 2nd ranked team in SH% (+3.34) as the Sharks total SH% (3.97%). Wild stuff.
