Since the folks in the desert are probably too busy, I've decided to draft up the letter to fans once the relocation is official.

A league source told ESPN that a Coyotes relocation could involve two separate transactions.

The NHL would purchase the Coyotes from Meruelo in a deal believed to be worth around $1 billion. This would mark the second time the NHL would have owned the Coyotes, buying the franchise from owner Jerry Moyes in 2009 after he filed for bankruptcy. The league owned and operated the Coyotes until 2013.

The league source said that after purchasing the team, the NHL would then sell the Coyotes to Smith at a price that could be as high as $1.3 billion -- much higher than the $650 million expansion fee that the Seattle Kraken's owners paid in 2021 to join the league. The source said the NHL's other 31 owners would split $300 million as part of the sale.

Reported by all the sports media outlets. Articles citing league sources. The NHL almost never publicly muses about relocation unless it's imminent.

I think this really is the end for our old Jets 1.0 in Arizona.
It's also an insane amount of money to pay the Coyotes owner. There must be some side deal where he pays the NHL all the money they lost supporting the Coyotes for so long. There should also be class action suits for forcing fans to watch a heavily dis-counted NHL team play and still pay full price for tickets. Bettman should claw back about $400 million from Meruelo.

And SLC is insane to pay $1.3 billion for the Yotes.

I think it's because the Jets are currently in 8th place in the league. So record against all the teams above them. Would probably help of they had mentioned that 🤔
Ah, okay. Well Colorado's our most likely opponent as well so being 2-0 is maybe a good sign that we possibly match up okay against them (vs. our 0-3 record against Dallas).

I didn’t realize Hellebuyck is the favourite for the vezins.
In terms of starters, he's got the best GSAx, SV%, 2nd in GAA. Keep in mind he plays behind Pionk which should be a 5x difficulty multiplier...

I feel dirty because its Edmonton… but I’ll cheer for anyone that beats Vegas.
5-1 now, they lose this and Blues only 3 back. But Vegas with a game in hand and with what should be a pretty easy remaining schedule: Minnesota, Colorado, Chicago and Anaheim. You'd think they should win those last 2 games for sure. But who knows, they got shelled by the Coyotes last week.

Playing on a university campus in that arena and being the secondary tenant is bottom of the barrel for the NHL, they either don't think he will win the auction or don't think he can build what he says without government help and that's not a sure thing and might take years before they start construction.
And not even selling out

Makes sense, actually. Hockey can thrive in any big market...even Phoenix! But it's been such a gong show for so long it's like the well is poisoned. You need a bit of a clean break and a reset. And the NHL owners will get paid on both ends of the deal. And it saves the NHL from the whole Mullett arena bush league stuff.
I guarantee that Phoenix will be a front runner for an expansion team.

Atlanta and Phoenix are key strategic markets that the nhl won't give up on.

They'll have to have a sane, well funded owner, and a building built or in progress though. They'll also have to show fanbase support, likely through an AHL franchise (do the roadrunners still exist?)
