But our discussion was about playing time.
Last year Peter Laviolette played the following players more minutes per game than Fehervary: Carlson, Orlov, Sandin, Gustaffson, Jensen. This year Carbery is giving more minutes per game to these guys: Carlson, Sandin, Jensen and Van Riemsdyk.
Call me crazy but I think Chychrun (on either of those Caps teams) is 3rd in TOI/game at worst. Fehervary is a decent player but I stand by my statement that exactly zero NHL coaches would give him more TOI than Chychrun. And that isn't even getting into Sanderson and Chabot when it comes to doling out playing time.
Fehevery is playing the 3rd most minutes in Washington this year, and was 4th last year as Gus and Sandin were traded for each other and both filled the PP role.
He has multiple games added to his ATOI this season with 1 minute played where he left the game with injuries within the first 5 of the game. They drag the ATOI down a significant amount.
Removing those, he’s sitting just under 20 a night for 3rd on the Caps.
Regarding coaches not wanting to play him over Chychrun, I’d think the vast majority in the league who are looking for a defensive player to ply the hard minutes and lead the Pk duties would. That doesn’t mean he’s going to get more minutes, the same way Zub plays that role now with the Sens and plays less than Chychrun.
My opinion on Chuchrun is very, very low.
Our discussion was that Brannstrom, or what I was operating under at least, was that he wouldn’t be getting more minutes in Washington, which he wouldn’t. He’s at best #3LD, and I highly doubt he’s being played ahead of Edmunsson. And they actually have 3 NHL RD.
Chances are he’s healthy scratched for a significant amount of games in Washington, as they don’t have a need to shift a guy from the left onto the right side.
He’s got Chabot and Sanderson ahead of him for sure. He was never going to be getting the 22 minutes a night Sandin is getting here as you said.
He isn’t getting that in Washington either, he’s got Sandin and Fehevery ahead of him. Neither is as good as Sanderson or Chabot.
Sens undoubtedly have more talent on the backend, but the assembly and construction is absolutely horrific.
Now, Would Washingto, or any other team want to give Brannstrom those minutes Sandin is getting? I highly, highly doubt it, but maybe.
